This European Concert takes us to the beautiful Baroque church in the Norwegian mining town of Røros. Simon Rattle conducts works including Beethoven’s revolutionary “Eroica” and Mendelssohn’s noble, songful Violin Concerto in E Minor. The soloist, playing a home fixture, so to speak, is the virtuoso, sensitive and personable Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang.

The fact that so many major works of classical Modernism first emerged as ballet music before they established themselves as independent symphonic compositions in the concert hall is no coincidence: It was after all the unbridled physicality and rhythmical, elemental force of dance that extended the boundaries of music in a revolutionary way. It was October 2010 when two musicians from Latvia debuted with the Berliner Philharmoniker: conductor Andris Nelsons and violinist Baiba Skride. At the time the press raved about a “sensational concert”. Now the two of them are returning to the Philharmonie. You can hear Dmitri Shostakovich’s unfathomable, virtuoso Violin Concerto No. 1 and Richard Strauss’ spectacularly orchestrated Alpine Symphony.

Reasonable accommodations. The room was cozy, the stove and fridge were nice. The coffee machines are useless, had to buy own filters to use properly. Couch had some stains, cable tv has no info about programs.

This place is great for conferences. Lots of space, good layout. The event food could have been better, that's my only complaint.
