Where ISN'T everybody? Many of the green areas on this #map , census blocks with zero official #population , are State and National  #Parks . One more reason to preserve, protect, and enjoy them.

Candy Crush Saga isn't just hard... it's NP-Complete. Which means, if we ever build a computer that can "beat" Candy Crush Saga (as in, efficiently find a general solution, like computers have "beaten" Connect Four [1] ), then we also get efficient solutions to the Traveling Salesman Problem, Knapsack Problem, and hundreds of other intractable problems of computer science. I heard the coca cola company makes them to boost sales. The casino games are different.

If #potholes  seem worse this winter than they've been in a while, it's not your imagination. Roads across the country are crumbling faster than we can repair them.

About three-fourths of U.S. states and many cities have outspent their maintenance budgets dealing with the extreme weather, said Greta Smith, an associate program director with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in Washington. She said this pothole season is “one of the worst in memory.”

The potholes are emblematic of a deeper chasm. The gap between the cost of improvements to U.S. transportation infrastructure and available revenue from both state and federal sources was as much as $147 billion, according to a 2009 National Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission report.

"Because the automobile can't deliver the promises of speed and freedom to 100% of the population, people continue to take up walking and bicycling, often in the direction of the nearest Metro station. When these non-drivers get in the way of the cars, and they do so often in urban settings, they upset the social order." And that's too bad, because the social order (in the form of complete streets) is changing, quickly.

Earth as the Moon's "moon": NASA's Lunar Orbiter IV captured this image of the Moon and crescent Earth in 1967, which was dutifully recorded on an analog tape and "forgotten" for decades. The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project (LOIRP) retrieved and restored it using the latest digital image processing techniques.

A year-long survey ending in July 2012 of 500,000 Americans ages 19 to 29 showed that 63 percent of those fully employed had a bachelor’s degree, and their most common jobs were merchandise displayers, clothing-store and cellular phone sales representatives. The share of recent college graduates in “good non-college jobs,” those with higher wage-growth potential, such as dental hygienists, has declined since 2000.

How much snow does it take to close school? A Redditor mapped snow accumulation and school closure data in every county to find out.

The Macintosh turns 30. Those of us who've been around for the last 30 years have seen an incredible transformation in personal computing technology. They may look chunky and clunky by today's standards, but all these devices were state-of-the-art when they were announced, and most of them advanced the state of the art, by a little or a lot. There isn't far to go until devices disappear completely, into the walls, our hands, or the air, but the road to this point has been a long and winding one.
