After testing a tablet (thanks for the inspiration from your lovely panoramas, +Ken Southerland!), I've decided that I'm way too input oriented to use one much, which is the conclusion I came to with my original, dust gathering ipad in days of yore. My need is really for something light weight and nimble, for to internet & write on (my 13" macbook pro is ~5lbs, which is way too much for these purposes + my poor arthritic hands). A chromebook seems like a good idea, particularly with 3g and google drive storage. Any suggestions about which? Thus far the Samsung 3g seems lightest weight and snappiest, but I do have cell phone service (Ting) with an inexpensive portable hot spot available, so maybe 3g is not an absolute.  You can def divert me and suggest another netbook/other solution entirely -- but no tablets. I'm a typer, not a toucher. Weirdest focus group ever:  +Morgan Sandquist? +Kalina Wilson? +Peter Zillmann? +Jon Van Oast? +Lisa Brandt Heckman? #netboook   #chromebook

Yeeeeeeah, my complaint about the original chromebook tester is how remarkably not-impervious to hawaiian punch it was. :) Kinda wondering if the Haswells will be as light as the 11.6" Samsungs (which are 2.6 lbs -- that's the selling point). I'll still have local storage on my iMac and through http://bitcasa.com (unlimited cloud!!).

Waiting sucks! I really need something right now, to keep me from wrecking my hands and shoulders on my heavy laptop. Edit: They show the weights now. Curses!

Need a timer?

Type "timer 10 minutes" into a Google search box.  Yup.

systems theory applied to race and health : “Most people don’t think of racism as a social construct that affects health,” says the trained clinical psychologist, who came to Rutgers last year from Columbia University. “They think of behaviors like diet, doctor visits, and the like, not so much about how the broader processes of inequality affect a person’s ability to engage in healthy behaviors.”

Has anybody ever bought a side of beef directly from a farm? I've decided to do so and would like advice about several aspects of the process (freezers, cuts, whether to meet the cow beforehand).

Good experiences with grass fed cattle farmers in Cascadia are very welcome!

LTE Android phones! Let's rap. Could anyone make a case for why the Galaxy 4 ($630) is $340 better than the Nexus 4 ($299)? The only compelling feature separating the two for me is that the Galaxy 4 has an ultrasensitive touch screen (responds to pens, nails, gloved fingers, etc) and I have a freaky deeky autoimmune disease which results in cold hands that are not recognizable to touch screens. It's annoying enough that I've been using a Walter White phone for actual calls for six months. I guess both these phones (anything new, really) are vast improvements. Open to $_yourSuggestedPhone as well, particularly if you like your screen.

It's an unfortunate name, but this is a local "Always Listening." Unlike Siri (and, generally, Google Now, which is the closer analog to Siri), it doesn't need to send the audio over a network to process your commands. It can process them locally.  It's just listening for a finite set of commands that it can act on.

So I guess this is definitely the place to ask what to do about my cell phone plan. My tmobile contract is up. I don't want it any more. I don't want an iPhone. I hardly ever make voice calls. I kinda like QWERTY. Dislike data throttling and am grandfathered into an unlimited tmobile plan.  What are you guys doing? Is Straight-talk any good? I am wholly unversed in prepaid phones, except for like two months when I was planning on leaving the country and smart phones hadn't happened.

I've added this just now. I was away from my computer unexpectedly for a few days last week and came back to 70 emails -- about a third from human beings. This is after a take-back-the-inbox rampage a month ago. Let's see if it works.

I've been using a GMail feature for the past couple of weeks that has turned out to be so useful that I'm sharing it. In the settings drop-down in the upper right-hand corner, select labs, and take a look for the one named SmartLabels -- it promises to tag bulk mail, commercial stuff, notifications, and forum posts.

As it turns out, the feature works really well. I have it set to archive everything but forum posts, so only text from other humans ever shows up in my inbox. Instead of waking up to at least a dozen notifications and weekly retailer deals, all that stuff is shunted off to a side folder. I can let it build up over a few days, then go in, read the important bits, and mark the rest as read.

Highly recommended for anybody who processes a high volume of email.
