Under the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) RRP rule, in effect on April 2010, maintenance workers, contractors, and others executing renovation, repair and painting (RRP) projects that disturb lead-based paint in apartments, homes, schools, and child care facilities constructed prior to 1978 must be certified.

Child-occupied facilities are defined as residential, commercial or public buildings where children under age 6 years old are present on a regular basis. The EPA lead safety practice training requirements apply to painting, repair or renovation, activities. The rule doesn’t apply to modest repair or maintenance activities where less than 6 square feet of lead-based paint is disturbed inside facilities or where less than 20 square feet of lead paint is disturbed on the exterior. Window replacement isn’t minor repair or maintenance.
