Opera Mini (the quite popular mobile browser that have all its pages rendered by Opera) does the same thing:

http://www.opera.com/mobile/help/faq/#security

"Is there any end-to-end security between my handset and — for example — paypal.com or my bank?
Opera Mini uses a transcoder server to translate HTML/CSS/JavaScript into a more compact format. It will also shrink any images to fit the screen of your handset. This translation step makes Opera Mini fast, small, and also very cheap to use. To be able to do this translation, the Opera Mini server needs to have access to the unencrypted version of the webpage. Therefore no end-to-end encryption between the client and the remote web server is possible.

If you need full end-to-end encryption, you should use a full web browser such as Opera Mobile."

The main thing is that they're not hiding this fact, and recommend that you use Opera Mobile (a full featured browser) instead, without Opera Turbo for a true end-to-end secure connection.

However for many people who simply just use Opera Mini - the real question is that are they aware of this? The vast majority wouldn't know so ultimately it's a question of trust.

Are you an avid bicyclist? Check out our latest Map Maker tutorial on cycling! You can learn how to update Trail/Path features or Road segments to appropriately reflect bike-oriented attributes, and how to add your favorite bike routes to Maps. And as biking directions expand through Europe, you can map your way to better cycling routes in more of your favorite places!(http://goo.gl/H0wUq). Time to dust off that bike pump and get riding!

Take a (virtual) trip through some of California’s most breathtaking national parks. We’ve added Yosemite, Redwood, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks to Street View. Make John Muir proud and check it out at http://goo.gl/jHYU0.

I had the opportunity recently to beta-test HoneyDocs, a web app that generates documents that can 'buzz home.' This is done by a unique, embedded GET request that is initiated when the generated document has been opened. Several use cases came to mind, but I was most interested in seeing if my ...

You still have to remind yourself, though – if they can turn this wiretapping off with a simple browser update after having been discovered doing it, there’s not much stopping Nokia from turning it on just as silently again at some point in the future, is there?

This is focused on the US but Stratfor has some great articles about other regions of the world. Has anyone read George Friedman's books like "The Next 100 Years: A forecast for the 21st century"?

I've read "The Next 100 Years" and it really changed the way I view the world.  It was written in 2008, so his first predictions about the collapse of China and the start of a new cold war with Russia look to be on schedule.  I think Friedman puts too much emphasis on geography, but his emphasis is certainly more useful than what I learned in school.  Current history books seem to give way too much credit to the influence of individuals, and they ignore geography, which significantly decreases the usefulness of learning history at all.

After a lot of theorizing, posturing, and non-human trials, it looks like bionic eye implants are finally hitting the market -- first in Europe, and hopefully soon in the US.
