The continuing defamation of Namib Desert Diamonds – NAMDIA – through malicious and unfounded reports riddled with innuendo and adjectives designed to sway opinion by particularly “The Namibian” newspaper cannot be allowed to continue unchallenged. Whilst we fully recognize, appreciate and respect the right of the editor to express opinion in the editorial section, “The Namibian” newspaper’s reports have, since 2016, openly displayed hostility underscored by unfounded allegations, purportedly by “insider sources” who continue to remain anonymous to this date.

We have decided to issue our response to this through a paid-for advertorial in all major newspapers of the country as we are confident that our response will not find its way on the pages of “The Namibian” as has been proven by the newspaper’s deliberate omission of Namdia’s responses to its questions and our stance on certain issues, including the alleged underselling of diamonds; our mandate and many other issues to an extend we have had to resort to paid-for-advertorials to respond to its allegations in its very own newspaper. This is an open letter therefore to the Editor of “The Namibian” newspaper.

“Our clients have paid premium prices and our cash position continues to strengthen. We hope to build on this positive momentum by expanding our client base through the exploration of mixed sales strategies depending on our assortment and the qualities and sizes that the mines present to us.” - Kennedy Hamutenya.

Under the terms of the KPCS, participating states must meet ‘minimum requirements’ and must put in place national legislation and institutions; export, import and internal controls; and also commit to transparency and the exchange of statistical data. Participants can only legally trade with other participants who have also met the minimum requirements of the scheme, and international shipments of rough diamonds must be accompanied by a KP certificate guaranteeing that they are conflict-free.

It is imperative that we as Namibians take ownership of our decisions and ensure that our strategies towards self-reliance are successfully implemented. And part of those decisions is for us – as Namibians – to be able to exercise our sovereignty, especially over the God-given natural resources for the improved socio-economic development of our country and its people.

It must be borne in mind that a diamond is not a homogenous product but a heterogenous one. Every single diamond has its own ‘fingerprint’ and therefore not a set price. This ‘fingerprint’ is dependent on the characteristics of the diamond which are determined by the ‘FOUR C’s’. The ‘FOUR C’s’ are CARAT WEIGHT (Size), CLARITY (quality), CUT (Shape of the diamond) and COLOUR. Each stone is unique in character in terms of colour, clarity, cut and carat, and therefore it is crucial that each individual stone is valued according to these criteria.

“When a client is buying Namdia diamonds they can be guaranteed that they are buying a 100 percent Namibian-mined diamond.

This is particularly important for those clients who want to give assurance to their end user client that they know the source of the diamond – that it was not involved in child labour, that it is not tainted as a conflict or blood diamond and that it has no links with money laundering or financing of terrorism.”

Do you know the story behind Eumbo?
It's a very special building to us, not only because it is the new home of NAMDIA, but also because it carries with it the spirit of both liberation and reconciliation.
In the exact location where Eumbo stands today, stood the “Old White House” which was the property of Danie Botha, a liberation struggle veteran and Member of Parliament (MP) in Independent Namibia’s first Parliament in 1991. In the pre-independence era, it was a sanctuary for many struggle stalwarts who would be on the run from Apartheid South Africa’s dreaded security apparatus. And sometimes it would just be a place where comrades, black and white would come together for more social gatherings.

“Namdia is a brave idea and a revolution that should have happened twenty years ago. Better late than never though, and finally we are pushing sovereignty over our natural endowment of resources to a new plateau.”

The current NAMDIA client base has paid a premium price for NAMDIA diamonds thus far, and this has enabled NAMDIA to become self-sustaining by building up much needed cash reserves in the absence of Government guarantee and the USD$ financing required to buy the rough diamonds from the NDTC.
We remain optimistic that Namibia’s highest quality gem diamonds will continue to fetch optimal prices in the very discerning world markets.
