College Counseling
The college counseling program has expanded. There are now two parent volunteers running the program. These volunteers maintain the ‘College Corner’ in the library- supplying the corner with college information, hint/tips for applications, scholarship information, and the like. These volunteers distribute documents to the students to help them organize and maintain applications and academic resumes. They also arrange SAT preparation for the students- either with a review day or a multi-week course. In addition to the parent volunteers, the school provides SAT prep books for the students, and a few teachers offer SAT prep tutoring, which takes place during free periods over a course of many weeks.

Additional Thoughts on our School
Many of the suggestions revolved around teachers and multiple or varied learning styles. There is a lot happening at St. Augustine Academy in this regard. Each year, the faculty comes together to discuss students with particular needs, and together the faculty comes up with an in-school individualized
education program for those students. Then, multiple times during the year, the faculty will again come  together and discuss those students’ progress, as well as any changes or additional adaptations that need to be made. The school also provides in-school in-services to discuss varied learning strategies. Each year, money is set aside, and the faculty is strongly encouraged to attend in-services and/or academic conferences. Some examples of conferences attended by teachers recently include: AP-By-The-Sea, the Sophia Institute, Classical Catholic Schools Conference, Science and Faith Seminars, and the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education. The teachers then return and present their findings to the entire faculty. Also, this year, a teacher is being sent to attend a multi-day conference on special teaching/learning styles, which, on his return, will be presented to the entire faculty.

The feasibility of hiring a part-time personal counselor was investigated. The school decided not to employ a counselor. The reasoning behind this, besides limited funds, was the belief that parents know what is best for their family. Therefore, the role of the school is simply to provide the families with lists of resources and to inform them of their options. Once this is done, the parents can decide which route to take for their family. The school maintains a list of excellent Catholic and Christian therapists, etc.

Saint Augustine Academy is constantly looking for ways to improve faculty salary. This is apparent in the language used during fundraisers and at board meetings. SAA still covers all costs of providing medical and dental benefits for its employees and their dependents despite rising costs (14%  increase in October!). In addition, St. Augustine Academy recognizes the need to raise the salaries of all of their teachers. Since salaries are based on the needs of the particular teacher, the school provides a just wage for each teacher.

God Bless,

Michael Van Hecke

St. Augustine Academy is open to all qualified students without regard to race, color, creed, nationality or ethnic origin. The school does not discriminate on the basis or race, color, sex, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of any of its policies. This policy does not conflict with the priority given to the admission or employment of Catholics.
