We are from NY and this is the best sushi I have had in a really long time!!! So incredibly fresh! The unfiltered sake was supreme! Highly recommend this place. Oh and the best part is that it costs only $4 per roll.

California rolls were small and made from crab sticks. Used plates were not taken away. Server was cold and unfriendly. Price was unreasonably high. If you want really good seafood you should avoid this place.

We ate a truly fabulous meal here. We stayed one night on Alii as an easy transition to the airport, and lucked into Shiono through Google (thanks Googlers!). This is the best sushi I have eaten and I live in SF bay area, with wonderful sushi available. The chefs readily accommodated our mixed crowd including vegetarians with special orders (like tempura purple yam and avocado--awesome). The hamachi nigiri was ephemeral and sublime, while the salmon skin roll was crispy and hearty. Order the Volcano roll, a wonderful rollercoaster of flavors and textures that makes you start wanting the next piece as you savor the finish of the one you just ate. Everything we got was fresh, delicate, and beautiful, down to the tender fresh shizo leaf and the baby nameko mushrooms in the seaweed appetizer. Price was reasonable, maybe a bit high compared to bay area, but appropriate for this quality. We spent $150 for four, including drinks and a round of sake for the sushi chefs. Our server was friendly, attentive, and happy to help us with our choices and check on ingredient availability for the special orders. Altogether a lovely evening and a bargain for a meal of this quality. This gem was tucked away in a complex of shops. Look for Thai Rin restaurant which fronts on the street, then walk in two or three storefronts. We ate on a Tuesday at about 8pm and had no wait, the place about half full. The ambiance was pleasant, quiet yet lively, with modern wall colors behind traditional japanese restaurant decor.

Excellent quality and quick service. We sat at the sushi bar. We had several orders of sashimi, nigiri, and maki. I was pleased by the quality of hamachi and toro, and the "spider roll" soft-shelled crab maki was quite delicious. The only drawback is that It is a tad bit expensive, but that is to be expected given its location in the Alii Highway tourist area of Kona. My friend who lives in Kamuela says that Shiono is probably the best Japanese restaurant on the Big Island.

Favorite sushi place, ever. It can take a while, but every roll is a masterpiece. We especially love the deep fried Philly rolls and Crunchy rolls. I recommend eating in so you can enjoy the ambiance. More of a date night place than a bring-your-toddlers-with-you place.
