I got 13 out of 13 which is apparently "better than 93% of the public and the same as 7%". I'm going to let Peo do the quiz later and I bet she'll get most of the answers too. This should be easy, basic stuff that every adult should understand as part of functioning in a modern society, especially when a lot of this stuff gets twisted by politics for medical debates or climate change discussions. If you don't know the basics, how can you be an informed electorate? If you don't know the basics, you're easily led about by fear mongering and charlatans.
Looking at the data table below the results from their phone survey (which to be fair is not something you can compare entirely to an online one, because I know I'm more likely to mess up if given multiple choice listed vocally as opposed to seeing them on a screen or piece of paper), it's also disappointing to see that most of the time more men knew the answers than women. Some are close enough to probably be statistically the same, but others show a significant gap. The only two where women did well were related to medications; in particular women did the best on something that's drummed home in pediatricians' offices with posters, flyers, and by the doctors' own words. Guess which parent is statistically more likely to take the kids to the doctor? But the questions about physics and geology show a sad, stark difference between men and women.
The age demographics are more scattered, but the education demographics are pretty much exactly what you'd expect.
There's much more in-depth analysis on their article here: http://www.people-press.org/2013/04/22/publics-knowledge-of-science-and-technology/ But take the quiz first since answers are given in the article, and if you find there's an area where you don't do as well as you like, follow groups like or 's science circle to help broaden your daily dose of science content.
Because science isn't an academic option: it's required learning for comprehending and setting public policy.
