Great new book on writing GNU makefiles, from John Graham-Cumming.  If you think you know how to do everything with GNU make, you'll discover you're wrong... I was!

Full Disclosure: I was a technical reviewer for this book.

The GNU Manifesto and the GPL, really, increased the quality of my professional life immensely.  Thinking about it now it's not too much to say I would probably not be working as a software developer anymore without them.

Happy Birthday!

PS. One thing this article misses as that while "user-visible" free software programs are not as popular as proprietary versions, the entire infrastructure of the Internet and the Cloud runs on free software almost exclusively: free software has absolutely destroyed proprietary programs in the lower layers.  Onward and upward!

I've published the last of the planned posts in my series on "metaprogramming make"; the final post discusses the eval function, with side-trips into foreach and call.  Previous posts discussed constructed include files, secondary expansion, constructed variables, expansion and evaluation.  I'm toying with the idea of a final post with some examples that combine them all, but it may need to wait.

The programmers among you may be interested in a new series of blog posts I've started about more advanced topics in GNU make.  The posts so far go over the basics, but there's more to come!
