Michelle Wright is a very familiar face in western Pennsylvania. As one of the longest-tenured anchors in the Pittsburgh market, she anchors WTAE Channel 4 Action News This Morning and writes and reports daily medical news.
Wright has done live on-scene reporting during the region's biggest stories, including the Flight 93 crash in Shanksville on 9/11, the Quecreek Mine rescue and the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh.
Her position has allowed her to develop positive relationships with some of the region's most influential people. She routinely interviews local, state and national legislative leaders, and the area's most talented medical doctors, surgeons and researchers. She has also interviewed Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Crosby, Peter Jennings, Dan Rooney, Jim Rohr, Barbara Bush, Troy Polamalu, President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Benjamin Netanyahu, Gov. Tom Corbett, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson and Space Shuttle commander astronaut Michael Fincke.
Western Pennsylvanians have also come to know and trust Wright for her participation in many charity events. In addition to emceeing fundraisers and award galas, she serves as a media spokesperson for Race for the Cure, Project Bundle Up, Fayette County Health Fair, The Emmaus Community, National Alliance for Mental Health, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Achieva and The Early Learning Institute.
A native of Lynchburg, Va., Wright graduated from Liberty University with a bachelor's degree in political science and a double minor in journalism and television. She arrived at WTAE in 1994 after leaving WSET in Lynchburg.
She remembers her most embarrassing broadcasting moment in the business: "I had to go from covering a train derailment in the rain straight to interviewing Barbara Bush, and I was covered in mud! Fortunately, Mrs. Bush was very gracious about it."
Hobbies include reading, watching movies, shopping for antiques, gardening, cooking, writing, and taking her two kids out for ice cream.
She has been honored with three Regional Emmy Awards, a National Headliners Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and honored by the Associated Press and the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasting.
