Happy Birthday Janis!
January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970
Janis Lyn Joplin was an influential American singer-songwriter of the 1960s; as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Her raw, powerful and uninhibited singing style made her one of the biggest female stars in her lifetime. She died of an accidental drug overdose in 1970 at age 27, after releasing three albums. Her fourth album, Pearl, was released a little more than three months after her death, reaching number 1 on the charts. Five singles by Joplin went into the Billboard Top 100, including "Me and Bobby McGee", which reached number 1 in March 1971. Her most popular songs include; 'Piece of My Heart', 'Cry Baby', 'Down on Me', 'Ball 'n' Chain', 'Summertime' and 'Mercedes Benz'.
Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. ipi/Wiki

Happy Birthday American Author Edgar Allan Poe!
January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849

An American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. One of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, he is generally considered the inventor of the Detective Fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the then emerging genre of Science Fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.

Edgar Allan Poe influenced literature in the United States and around the world, his works now appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished Mystery genre work.

Works; 'The Raven' 'Pit and the Pendulum' 'Tell-Tale Heart' 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' 'The Black Cat'. + ipi/Wiki

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 2018...
"As King marched, someone hurled a stone. It struck King on the head. Stunned, he fell to one knee. He stayed on the ground for several seconds. As he rose, aides and bodyguards surrounded him to protect him from the rocks, bottles and firecrackers that rained down on the demonstrators. King explained why he put himself at risk:
"I have to do this, to expose myself, to bring this hate into the open." ipapereye.com / ipapereye@gmail.com

Happy Birthday, Bill Graham!
January 8, 1931 – October 25, 1991 R.I.P.
Born 'Wulf Wolodia Grajonca'; Graham was a German-American impresario and rock concert promoter from the 1960's until his untimely death in a 1991 helicopter crash.
On July 4, 1939 he was sent from Germany to France to escape the Holocaust. At age 10 he settled in a foster home in the Bronx, New York, eventually graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School and from City College with a business degree.

In the early 1960's, he moved to San Francisco and started managing the San Francisco Mime Troupe in 1965. Then teaming up with local Haight Ashbury Promoter, Chet Helms and Family Dog, to organize and promote several free benefit concerts, eventually turning into a profitable full-time career. Graham had a profound influence around the world, sponsoring the musical renaissance of the 1960's from San Francisco, creating a proving ground for rock bands and acts including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, among others. ipi/Wiki

Happy Birthday, American Artist JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT!
Dec. 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988, R.I.P.
Born in Brooklyn to a Haitian father and Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat first achieved notoriety as part of SAMO©, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s where the hip hop, post-punk, and street art movements had coalesced. By the 1980s, he was exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his art in 1992.
Basquiat's art focused on "suggestive dichotomies", such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique.
Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a "springboard to deeper truths about the individual", as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism, while his poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at age 27. ipi/Wiki
