6 Ways to Cut Construction Costs (Revisited) - Simple Porch When designing a home or addition, part of the fun for the owner is imagining the project finished without any compromises. When bids come in from the contractors, many home owners are eager look at ways to reduce the price without loosing space or the character of the project. As the architects, our job is to help bring the price down as far as possible without loosing the qualities that the owners loved in th... http://ow.ly/2XaoM7

8 Window Seats - Window Seat in Bookcase I love window seats.  They are the perfect place to store things, sit and tie your shoe, or relax and read a book.  Sometimes we build them in a kitchen and call them breakfast bays, but if it is a seat built under a window-it’s a window seat.  They can be plain or fancy, adorned with cushions or simple slabs, in the end, they evoke a warm inviting feeling in the room. We sometimes use window seats to hide radiators or heating an... http://ow.ly/2X3OGO

Sun Room (Revisited) - Sun Room in the Snow The best time to enjoy a sunroom can be the middle of winter.  While we always think of sitting in a sun room looking out over a lush garden, the time when we need sun the most is when those plants are well below the snow.  Like sitting on a porch in the summer while a warm rain falls out in the yard, sitting in a sun room around a crackling fire while it storms outside can be a wonderful experience. When planning a sunroom, m... http://ow.ly/2Vqjrs

Winter Lambs - Lambs and Sheep I had a wonderful experience this morning.  Our only pregnant sheep had a ram and a ewe lamb. Even though we have had sheep for many years, this was my first time seeing the actual birth-I usually arrive a few minutes too late.  Lamb One came out quite a long time after the ewe’s water broke.  I thought sure it wasn’t going make it, but after the mom started licking her, we heard a soft bleet.  As soon as she finished cleaning up, Lamb Two... http://ow.ly/2VePIU

Dinner and Entertaining on 13 Porches - Table Set for Twenty I’ve been dreaming of spring lately, and nothing heralds the arrival of spring like dinner on the porch.   At our home, as soon as it is warm enough, the porch becomes the center of outdoor entertaining.  We often install radiant heaters for our clients, which allow an early start and an extended season.  Our clients use their porches for relaxing, dining, and entertaining.  The good news is that there are so ... http://ow.ly/2VdcfR

Where to Put the TV (Updated) - We Americans have a love/hate relationship with our televisions.  I try to limit my children’s time in front of the screen, but I myself spent my share of free time in front of the tube.  That was so long ago, I remember going to the local store to replace tubes that had burned out.  On the one hand, there is a huge amount of mindless junk on TV, but we have never had a greater choice of excellent content at our fingertips.  Whether you l... http://ow.ly/2UrLm8

Pool Pavilion (Featured Project) - Pool Pavilion To break up my focus on shoveling snow and chipping ice out of the animal’s water buckets, I thought I would remind everyone that spring and summer will come again and a nice cool drink will be appreciated. Set in the rolling hills of the Berkshires, this open air pavilion with fireplace and kitchen completes the poolside entertaining package. The nights can be a little cool in the Berkshires even in the summer. The firep... http://ow.ly/2Upt8H

12 Living/Family Rooms - Lake House Living Room Living rooms are the place we gather with friends and family.  They come in all sizes, shapes and decors, and  are as diverse as families themselves.  In my living room, it is not uncommon for us to light a fire in the fireplace, which is in front of the couch, and then watch TV which is in the corner of the room.  Not a perfect set up, but my home is an old farm house from the 1790′s that has been added on to over the cen... http://ow.ly/2Uatkf

Backyard Chronicles (January 2015) - Rosie and Chloe Our children don’t always get along, but our animals can’t seem to get enough of each other.  I will say though, none of the other animals carry on a love affair like Chloe the cat and Rosie the dog.  When we walk up to feed the animals first thing in the morning, Chloe hides behind a tree so she can ambush Rosie and then they both proceed to wrestle, chase, and hug and chew on each other.  I personally have never see... http://ow.ly/2TkgA4

6 Carriage House-Lofts - Garage-Guest House Garage-Guest House One of the most cost effective places to gain a bonus space is above a garage.  By picking up the roof a few feet when building a garage, you can gain usable space such as guest quarters, great storage, a painting studio, home theater, or an all purpose loft.  When we are designing a garage we always suggest adding those extra few feet of head room even if there are no immediate plans to finish it off.  Some... http://ow.ly/2T83Sa
