You may need to reconsider the name "Pocket Universe" though.

Buying an unlocked iPhone 5

It looks like the US Apple Store won't get unlocked iPhone 5's at launch, and if the same pattern as previous devices holds true, it might be a month or more before they are available.

In contrast, the UK will have unlocked devices one day one.

In the past, I've just bought UK models and then used them both in the UK and the US.

However, this time this plan might not work so well - there are three distinct models of iPhone 5. One is CDMA (which we can discount, as it's not used in the UK), and two GSM versions. The difference between GSM models seems to be the LTE channels in use.

1. GSM model A1428*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 4 and 17)

2. GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)

Now, from what I can tell, there are different LTE bands used in the UK and US, and so a UK iPhone 5 bought in the UK might not work on LTE in the US, and vice versa.

I'd love to get some confirmation of this.

Some clarification on LTE bands

Tl;dr - the AT&T model won't support LTE in Europe.

On Friday, I was trying to use the Bing API to test an issue we were having while using .NET 4.5, LINQ and async/await patterns. While Bing recommends you use their .NET library, I needed to keep my example as a pure core lib...

zeitgeist

eschew skeumorphism

a game for iPhone

release date: January 29th, 2013

You can’t read an Apple-related news story or blog post these days that doesn’t mention skeumorphism: the design pattern than models virtual on-screen objects after real-world counterparts.

zeitgeist is a game that is as far from faux-stitched leather as you can get. It strips the graphics down to the bare minimum, and then goes one step further and strips the game-play down too.

The game opens with an invitation to complete the first level, and after you tap start you’re on the own. Half the fun is working out what you are supposed to be doing - but don’t worry, it’s hard.

Gameplay is simple, but challenging and gets progressively more tricky and consuming. This first release is deliberately simple with minimal twists - subsequent updates will expand upon these ideas.

A while ago I posted a silly idea for an app called Grudge.

Well, whilst learning CoreData I accidentally wrote it. It's now on the app store, and it's free.

My new app idea:

Grudge List

Do you like having grudges? But sometimes forget who they are against, or what for? Don't worry, Grudge App is here.

* Simply enter the name of the person who has wronged you, a brief description of what they did, and a rating from 1 to 10 (1 = annoyed me a bit, 10 = divorce papers are being prepared).

* Grudges can be flagged in case the person who annoyed you did so in a dream you had. The grudge can still be real of course, but you'll know not to mention it to others and so avoid potentially embarrassing situations ("And then the bastard strangled all my penguins! The pink ones!")

* Add an automatic forgiveness date (or set to 'Never' or 'Not in this lifetime").

* Fill in the optional "What you need to do to get off my Grudge List" field which can be automatically emailed to your grudge-ee. Pre-existing examples include "buy me flowers", "say sorry but actually mean it for a change" or simply "drop dead".

* Will generate a warning if the grudge is being entered in a specific recurring date window. You know what I'm taking about.

* Grudge List links with the Contacts database for ease of use - after all, most of the people you'll have a grudge against will be known to you. Perhaps as a special feature I can add "That bastard in the white Ford" or "The self-righteous bitch in the supermarket".

A companion app "Uh-oh, now what did you do" will share the grudges over iCloud, so you'll always know what you did wrong, and to whom, and how to make it right.

Getting Mountain Lion running on a MacPro 1,1 is possible - with caveats. One of the caveats is that you have a supported graphics card, and the system here has one which isn't compatible, as it turns out. It was taken from a MacPro 3,1 and support was just borderline.. and it seems to be the blocking issue. This particular system wouldn't work with an updated card (which is now in another 1,1 where it works perfectly - weirdness). So it seems this system is limited to Lion, and that's all there is to it (unless I risk spending $500 on a card which may or may not work).

I hope to try ML on the other MacPro 1,1 with the better card soon.

The official HD 5770 card from Apple is $250. However, a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 with a flashed ROM to work with Mac is $139. I wonder if it would work?
