Repackaged in fine brown paper to keep it reasonably fresh, it's Thursday morning on Friday on WPKN FM.

Relive the glory, tick tick tock.

The Internet has become the land of "the free" - free info, free music, free stuff. If you think about it for even a few seconds, you know how unsustainable that is. Imagine a world (it isn't very hard) where all of your news and information is provided by large advertising conglomerates who have little regard for your intelligence or needs, and are surely not interested in the kind of unusual music and ideas that drive RootsWorld.

The Internet as a whole is at the crossroads: do we pay the people we depend on for information - writers and editors, techies and artists - who deserve some small remittance for their hard work and years of experience? Or do we just let it all wither under a barrage of come-ons, ear wash, click-bait and advertising?

And we're also at that crossroads at RootsWorld. Maybe we can be the small experiment what shows the whole world that we can do better, working together.

Streaming online for a few weeks: The music of Basco
Listen online for the next few weeks: The music of the Denmark-based band Basco , in an excerpt from a concert with the Danish Radio Big Band, and later in the show a performance at the Tønder Festival in August, 2014. In between, we'll listen to music new and old from Suden Duden (Norway), Spiro (UK), Marta Sebestyén (Hungary), Rudl Trio (Norway), and Dálava (US). Find out more about a special Danish concert series for the Fall/Winter season on the web site.

"One of the many things I love about Nordic folk music is the way musicians are not afraid to blend traditional hardingfeles, nyckelharpas, and kanteles with "new" instruments. I am thinking in particular about the saxophone, and the way it's been integrated into Nordic folk music, by ensembles like Goodland Trio. Maybe it's the thrill of mixing various reed instruments -- accordions and harmonicas and clarinets -- in a confined musical space. Or maybe it's that saxophones are shiny." - Greg Harness reviews.

""Georgianne Nienaber talks with New Orleans songwriter Kim Carson about hard times, good people and country music. As with any story from Georgianne, this is also about time and place - New Orleans' Algiers Point in post-Katrina Louisiana. Go to the web site to read her tale, listen to some of Kim Carson's music and get a feel for late night at The Point."~~Roots World
