Ginger Compound is Highly Toxic to Liver Cancer Cells in Vitro: In this just-published study, 6-Shogaol (the main antioxidant in ginger) was shown to kill up to 80% of human liver cancer cells by interfering with the cancer cell’s ability to make protein, and also causing a deadly cascade of reactive oxygen radicals within the cancer cells. What makes ginger so powerful? It contains a multitude of unique and powerful antioxidants such gingerol, 6-shogaol, gingerdiols, and mor...e which are not only toxic to cancer cells but also provide numerous health benefits. In fact, this super-herb has already been shown in clinical trials to lower blood sugar, insulin, triglycerides and cholesterol in patients with Type II Diabetes (dose: 1600 mg daily), lower oxidative stress in breast cancer patients (dose: 3000 mg), improve cognitive functioning in middle-aged women (dose: 800 mg) and to even reduce severity of PMS symptoms in women (dose: 500 mg). Wheatgrass Kills 72% of Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro: An extract of wheatgrass was shown to potently suppress human breast cancer cells in this study, killing up to 72% after 48 hours. Wheat grass is a rich source of powerful enzymes as well as beta carotene, vitamin C, potassium, iron and calcium. More intriguingly, wheat grass juice is a very rich source of chlorophyll (the dry matter is 70% chlorophyll by weight). Chlorophyll is structurally very similar to hemoglobin, except that instead of containing iron, chlorophyll contains magnesium. For this reason wheat grass is often viewed as supporting healthy blood, and indeed clinical studies have shown that patients with the blood disorder thalassemia major required fewer blood transfusions when given wheat grass juice. In another clinical trial, terminally ill cancer patients also saw their hemoglobin levels rise when given wheat grass juice (dose: 30 ml daily from 5 day old wheat grass) and their quality of life scores improved significantly. The super-green is also so rich in antioxidants, that it was shown in a clinical trial to reduce oxidative stress in healthy adults. And in a recent trial on breast cancer patients, wheat grass juice actually reduced the toxicity of chemo drugs to the patients’ bone marrow, thus reducing the damage done to their immune systems (dose: 60 ml daily of juice during chemo).

Sweet Potato Greens—the Anti-Cancer Superfood: In this new study, researchers discovered that an extract of sweet potato leaves was extremely toxic to human lung cancer cells, killing 94% of them in vitro. The extract was also highly toxic to liver and stomach cancer cells. Other research has shown that these super-greens are also active against breast cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia. Banana Halts Prostate Cancer Growth by >80%: An extract of banana peel (from organic bananas) was shown slow the growth of prostate cancer cells by over 80% in this study, by inhibiting the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH) in men is also caused by excess DHT, so in theory banana peel extract could also help with this condition. Intriguingly, this is exactly what was observed with mice in this same study—their prostate overgrowth was significantly inhibited by banana peel extract. What makes banana peels so special? Previous lab studies have shown them to be rich sources of powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Although no studies have been done using banana peels on humans, several population studies have shown that regular banana consumption may reduce colon cancer risk by up to 72%, breast cancer risk in women by 43% and kidney cancer risk by 46%. Bananas (and peels) are also rich sources of melatonin: in fact, eating two bananas quadrupled melatonin levels in healthy adults in one recent study. This is relevant to prostate cancer: another study from Europe showed that men with the highest levels of melatonin had 75% less risk of prostate cancer! And alkaline diet fans take note: one medium banana has the same alkalizing power as 1.5 cups of pure lemon juice!

Lemongrass Halts 68% of Colon Cancer in Vivo: In this study, researchers discovered that an extract of lemongrass not only reduced the risk of colon tumors in mice by up to 68%, but also reduced DNA damage in their intestines by up to 78%. Lemongrass (or its essential oil) has also been shown in other studies to potently suppress breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer and leukemia, and also to powerfully boost liver detox enzymes and protect the liver from damage leading to cancer. But the health benefits of this super-herb don’t stop there. Lemongrass essential oil is such a powerful antibacterial and antifungal (killing Candida albicans) that it’s used in a mouthwash which was clinically proven to reduce bad breath! Studies have also shown this Asian wonder-herb to be a potent anti-inflammatory, to lower blood sugar and cholesterol (in mice) as well as lower cholesterol in some people—which may make it helpful against diabetes and heart disease. Raw Vegetables May Cut Breast Cancer Risk in Half: Just one serving daily of raw vegetables was shown to reduce women’s risk of breast cancer by 49% in this study from Germany. And this is not the first study to show such amazing results. A previous study from Uruguay also showed a 49% breast cancer risk reduction with one serving daily. And the health benefits of raw vegetables don’t stop there. Other studies have shown that raw vegetables may reduce women’s lung cancer risk by 60% (for non-smokers), endometrial cancer risk by 40%, and ovarian cancer risk by 53%. The protective doses in all those studies range from one to three servings daily of raw vegetables (as minimum). Raw vegetables were far superior to cooked for cancer protection in these studies, and in other research also for preventing heart disease and lowering blood pressure! The raw vegetables eaten in the German study were mixed salads, fresh herbs (parsley, watercress, chives, basil, dill), green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, red and green peppers, carrots, radishes and cabbage. These healthy super-foods are low in calories, quick and easy to prepare in salads or smoothies. But women may want to prioritize lettuce, cucumber and carrots: an older study from Greece showed that women eating all three of these daily saw a stunning 88% reduction in breast cancer risk.

Onion Kills 85% of Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro: An extract of onions was shown to kill up to 85% of aggressive, triple-negative breast cancer cells in vitro in this study. It also dramatically slowed the cancer cell’s growth by 84%, by shutting down their ability to manufacture fatty acids. But can onions reduce breast cancer risk in women? Yes, according to a study out of Italy where women consuming at least one serving of onions daily saw a 25% reduction in breast cancer risk (one serving = 3 ounces or 80 grams). That same dosage also reduced ovarian cancer risk by 73%. Why are onions so powerful? They contain thiosulfinates (sulfur-based compounds which potently inhibit cancer) and they are also a uniquely concentrated source of healthy 4-Oxo-flavonoids: only kale, black currants and the herb sage deliver as much per ounce! Onions may have further health benefits as well: they have lowered blood sugar in diabetic patients in one study, and in a recent clinical trial, overweight women eating 50-60 grams daily of raw red onion actually saw their cholesterol levels drop significantly. Onions are low in calories, are easy to include in a healthy diet in salads, soups, omelettes, sandwiches, even smoothies. Note: just as raw garlic is better than cooked for fighting cancer, raw onion is likely to offer the most benefit (both are allium vegetables).

Bean Compound Halts 96% of Colon Cancer Cells in Vitro and Reduces Risk in Humans: Researchers have discovered that an extract of tepary beans was extremely toxic to colon cancer cells, slowing their growth by up to 96% in vitro by interfering with their ability to break down, and utilize, key proteins. Do the health benefits of beans extend beyond the lab? Yes, according to multiple studies which show that eating beans or legumes reduces advanced colon cancer recurrence risk by 65% (dose: 41 grams daily of dried beans added to diet), colon cancer risk in women by 33% (>4 servings weekly, one serving = 80 grams or half a cup), stomach cancer risk by 80% (dose: one serving daily), breast cancer risk by 24% (dose: 2-4 servings weekly), aggressive prostate cancer risk by 37% (dose: one third of a serving weekly of pea, lentil or black bean soup), and leukemia risk by 74% (dose not given: just “high consumption”). What makes beans (and legumes) so powerful? They are rich in fibre, folic acid, potassium, magnesium and manganese—but most importantly they contain highly specialized compounds known as protease inhibitors, which severely disrupt cancer cell’s metabolism of proteins and their ability to metastasize. So try a new beans recipe this week: they are great in soups, salads, stews, chili, casserole, and most of your favorite Mexican dishes.
