So, we have a massive, complex infrastructure of wires and cables connecting every house, digital audio and video streaming through the air directly into our lounge rooms, high speed mobile networks putting the internet in our pockets... and yet, daily, huge factories work through the night to print yesterday's news onto huge sheets of paper, cut it up, roll it up, wrap in it plastic, load it up onto trucks, drive it to every suburb, hand it to another guy who jumps in his car and drives up and down every single street to throw these things out his window and onto our front lawns, just to add to the pile of others that no one picked up to read the last 17 times he did this.

Even forgetting about the environmental effect of that for a second... it's just WEIRD.

When I worked for someone else, all I wanted to do was work from home. When I worked from home, I just wanted to get my own office. I've worked from my own office for 3 years and all I want to do is to work from a coffee shop. So, I'm in a coffee shop, but...

Living with a shiny new "developer in training" has made me realise how much better things are than they used to be when it comes to cross browser development (there has been many statements along the line of "...in the old days, we had to do it THIS way. Can you believe it?"). Still, I wish we could just ignore 7-10% of users, like 37signals can do. I can't deny that the tools and resources to help us deal with these problems have gotten a lot better, but the personal stress and cost to my business that these old browsers incur is still way too high.
It used to be one of the biggest pains of web development. Juggling different browser versions and wasting endless hours coming up with workarounds and hacks. Thankfully, those troubles are now largel...

Why are software development task estimations regularly off by a factor of 2-3?
Answer: Let's take a hike on the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles to visit our friends in Newport Beach. I'll whip out my map and draw our route down the coast: [image: http://qph.cf.quoracdn....

Well, this explains at least one reason I was confused in Basecamp yesterday.

Nice feature, but it could do with a small message explaining "This draft has been restored", rather than just dumping whatever you were typing back into the textarea without explanation. Perhaps I'm still stuck in the mindset that if I close a window without posting or saving, whatever I was working with is gone. I think I use that intentionally as a 'feature' sometimes, particularly if I change my mind about posting the message I was typing. Having my "screw you, that's a bad request and I won't do it" message that I never actually intended to send, reappear when I next open Basecamp, is a little scary.

On the other hand, perhaps I'll no longer need to draft messages in BBEdit before posting them, just incase Safari crashes for the fifteenth time that hour.

+Marco Arment shows that you don't need words to make a point. Also I can't help noticing, that plane has no engines. No wonder RIM is in trouble.

Louis CK's Shameful Dirty Comedy I’ve been thinking about Louis CK lately. I’m a fan of his show on FX, and I’m so happy his recent adventure in distributing his newest comedy special himself has been...
