Salt Prints, Large Graphics and Sound 1st October until 7th November, preview evening on 7th October 6pm until 9pm all welcome at MADE Brighton, North Road.

Friends please share the event for me and invite friends:

As part of the Brighton Photo Fringe held during the Photo Biennial local photographer Heather Buckley will be exhibiting images and stories of the Irish traveller community in and around Limerick.

Over the past two years Heather has been building up relationship with travellers around Limerick and has been recording traveller voices at home and at horse fairs, to support her images in telling their story.

The exhibition portrays both the grim reality of circumstance and people who are proud of their culture. The children talk about school, aspirations and horses. The parents talk of loss, abandonment, tradition and poor living conditions.

20 of the images in the exhibition are salt prints, expertly created from Heather’s original files by traditional wet-process printers Paul Daskarolis and Stuart Kuhn. It’s one of the first photographic process originally developed in the 1830’s.

Each salt print is a one off, a rarity since the digitisation of photography. ”I felt that the quality of a salt print compliments the subject. They are unique, a little rough around the edges, charming and very real.”

The exhibition is an immersive installation of sound, large graphics and salt prints. A story told with stories within. Showing at Made Brighton café and gallery 66/67 North Road from1st October until 4th November. (Ignore the end time on Facebook, it doesn't allow you to select more than two weeks!)

Prieview on the 7th October 6pm until 9pm all welcome

Ballinasloe Irish Travellers horse fair 2014 Ballinasloe Fair
I took this image two years ago. I remember showing it to the company I was with, really excited, the thrill of getting something different, something, in your opinion, quite good.

I remember getting the non plussed looks, and the "it's OK"'s and decided that it wasn't as good as I had thought.

It never made it though to the editing stage.

Now I am getting ready to continue my journey. I'm going back very soon it'll be my 4th time in 2 yrs, and I'm going through the images as I've promised prints to so many travellers, I've got some serious file sorting to do.

I've also been doing a lot of unravelling lately. Working out where some of my instincts were created and recognising those subconscious reactions and consciously changing my instinctive reaction to certain events.

So this is an example. My instinctive reaction is to trust what others think about my work, (sometimes that is a useful thing to do) but I still love this image.

So thought/s for the day.

Trust most of your instincts. Learn the difference between good ones (I really like that image it gives me a good feeling) and bad ones (nobody else likes it so it isn't that good).

Don't allow yourself to self censor your work to please others

Be as original as you can be

These traveller kids are amazing riders, They ride bareback, and the horses are really slippery when wet. It's amazing how they stay on.
