Gazing up at the Eiffel Tower post-baguette, or tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain before devouring bowls of cacio e pepe are dreamy European experiences that will forever inspire flights to Paris and Rome. Beyond such timeless locales, however, curious itinerants are increasingly looking east for inspiration, dreaming of washing down braised beef and bread dumplings with Pilsner in Prague, or hatching holiday plans around the Glühwein-fueled Christmas markets of Vienna. Now that these majestic capitals are swelling with tourists, the intrepid are seeking out the rough-around-the-edges delights of less-developed nations like Montenegro, Slovenia, and Georgia, a predilection poised to intensify in 2017.

Most Australian itineraries tend to favor the big cities—Sydney, Melbourne—but thirty minutes from Adelaide, a new #adventure #destination is taking shape. The action centers around Eyre Peninsula, an enchanting coastal region with rich marine life and footprint-free beaches. In fact, little of the scenery has changed since English explorer Matthew Flinders first arrived here in 1802—and for now, at least, tourists have overlooked it.

Port Lincoln, the hub of Eyre Peninsula, has been dubbed the seafood capital of Australia for its excellent bluefin tuna, oysters, and abalone, which often lands on high-end sushi menus in Tokyo and Hong Kong. But the scenery—jagged cliffs, full-sky sunsets, and brilliant turquoise waters—is just as impressive. Earlier this year, adventure operator Goin’ Off Safaris came up with a novel approach to combine the two: heli-fishing. Guests are picked up by a chopper at the Port Lincoln airport for a quick flight over glittering waters, where it’s common to spot schools of wild salmon and King George whiting.

Whether you’re embarking on an Eat Pray Love–inspired pilgrimage, or jet-setting to a faraway land sans plus-one to shake up your everyday routine, every woman should experience the joys and freedom of #traveling alone at least once. “The number one common misconception about solo #travel is that you get lonely,” says travel writer and expert Lesley Murphy, who documents her experiences abroad via her blog, The Road Les Traveled. “Let me tell you: One is not the loneliest number. I meet more people when I’m traveling by myself than when I’m traveling with a buddy or group. I’m forced to break out of my comfort zone. Also, I can be extremely selfish in times like these: going where I want, when I want, all in the name of freedom.” Bidding adieu to 2016, we’ve rounded up the best spots to travel to alone in 2017, so you can start mapping out your vacation time now.

With less than a week to go before 2016 ends, countless "new year, new you" resolutions are likely underway — in addition to travel plans being made for the upcoming year.

For those would-be #travelers vowing to see more of the world — or at least to visit cool parts of the country — there are plenty of places to consider. AFAR put together a (somewhat overwhelming) list of 100 places to visit next year, including 16 cities in the U.S. alone. It also created a 25-question quiz to help narrow down which locations might be a good match for vacationers.

The year 2016 has come and gone, which means that we've now turned toward all things 2017—namely, where to go, and why—and why you should go there. In this week's edition of the Travelogue podcast, we dive even deeper to what 2017 will look like from a #travel perspective: think passport changes, new airport security shortcuts, more (and more) fare classes on #airplanes, the rise of low-cost, long-haul flights, and—yep—how Trump could affect travel.

Thanks to our host Brad Rickman and to Laura Redman, Katherine LaGrave, and Mark Ellwood for keeping it lively; to Sebastian Modak for stepping in on recording duties, and to in-house wizard Brett Fuchs for his usual mixing mastery. Check back every Friday for our latest installment of Travelogue. To keep up with our podcast each week, subscribe to Travelogue on the iTunes store or the podcasting app of your choice.

Whatever type of #holiday you prefer – whether it's a 5-star luxury beach villa or a cosy bed & breakfast tucked away in the countryside – it's a truth universally acknowledged that #travel makes us happy.

But now, global research commissioned by Booking.com, the leader in connecting people with the most incredible places to stay, has revealed that travel gives us such an emotional boost, we consider planning and going away on holiday more vital for our happiness than other big life occasions – such as our own wedding day (49%), going on a date with your partner (51%), landing a new job (50%), getting engaged (45%), and even having a baby (29%). Furthermore, 77% say they book a holiday just when they're in need of a happiness boost.

2016 has been one hell of a ride. I remember waking up the morning Brexit was confirmed and feeling a little like the world would never be the same again. And then the presidential election happened, and the axis tilted even more. This, amidst the continued devastation in the Middle East, natural disasters occurring more and more regularly, and climate change reaching a pivotal moment in time, have combined to ensure 2016 will go down as the year the world changed forever.

A bleak picture I know, and I believe this sentiment is shared by my fellow millennials all across the world. After all, these decisions are literally writing our future before our very eyes, leaving us feeling powerless and, personally speaking, miserable. Dissatisfaction and fear of the future is the resounding conversation amongst my friendship group at present, and I imagine that’s similar for my many people reading this article. I feel like I’m constantly seeing and reading the negative, without any suggestion of what I can do to make a change

Whenever one of my friends tweets that they’re at (or on their way to, or getting ready to go to) the airport, I start refreshing their Twitter to see if anything has gone wrong. The only good kind of Twitter, maybe the only good kind of social media, that remains is Travel Twitter. And Travel Twitter gets better the more things go wrong for the tweeters.

Twitter, like so much of the internet’s social corners is full of trolls, toxic arguments, and self-promotion, by turns distressing and mind-numbing. But around the holidays is still the best time for social media, when all of these little oversaturated digital playgrounds get briefly more bearable. Holiday Twitter is the best Twitter because Holiday Twitter contains the highest per-capita occurrence of #Travel Twitter (which includes the sub-categories of Airport Twitter and Megabus Twitter and Train Twitter (especially Quiet Car Twitter) and Rental Car Twitter).

What’s on your #travel checklist? We’re all usually hung up on remembering our passport, travel money and the luggage essentials, but nowadays a fully prepped smartphone is just as important as a well-packed travel bag.

Today’s travellers are smart. They know that visiting a new country takes prep and organisation, and that nowadays heading abroad without a few decent apps to help along the way could lead to a whole host of travel mishaps. If you’re not already stocked up on handy travel apps you could be missing out on big deals and once in a lifetime experiences.

The world of private #adventure #travel trips is booming. Offered by many of the same tour operators who have scheduled group trips, these custom trips are a chance to go with your family and friends — and just your family and friends — on a biking, hiking or multisport trip. They might sound expensive, but here are five myths to consider the next time you’re planning an adventure getaway with your tribe.
