In the activity “The Four Forces & The Standard Model”, students can learn about properties of objects that influence whether an object sinks or floats in the water. They get the assignment to find out which materials they can use to build a raft that floats in order to leave the island they are currently on. By going through all phases of inquiry, they will gain knowledge about mass, volume and density, and their relation to each other. The activity was selected as resource of the week by GTTP.

Following last March’s great success with more than 1000 schools from around the world involved in the activity, we are happy to announce the Eratosthenes Experiment September 2016, which will take place on the 22nd of September, 2016! Do not miss the opportunity to participate in this fascinating international event! Register your school here!
To celebrate this event, Ellinogermaniki Agogi offers one scholarship for the ISE Summer School Academy 2017 in Greece (programme to be announced in October 2016), with all expenses covered. The participants can win this scholarship by participating in the Eratosthenes Photo Contest.
Stay tuned by joining the Eratosthenes Community , where you can also find lesson plans of the experiment based on the Inquiry Based Model. There, you’ll find your country’s community (Network of related communities - on the right) and the lesson plans for primary school and high school in your languages! If you do not have access to computers or tablets your students’ knowledge on the subject will be assessed by the means of an online questionnaire which can be found here. The questionnaire, available in many languages, should be answered before the lesson begins (pre-questionnaire) and after the lesson’s end (post questionnaire) so as to monitor the knowledge obtained by the students.
Students get to reproduce the measurement of the circumference of the Earth, one of the most important scientific measurements ever performed, using the simplest apparatus! More details on how to do the experiment are on the website: http://eratosthenes.ea.gr/en/content/experiment.

As children, we’re taught to paint cold things blue and hot things red. In science we learn that blue things are actually far hotter than red things! In this Hangout, we will learn how hot objects radiate energy as light of many colors following what is called a black body curve.
