Task 2: Data- Patterns & Play  -

This is an amazing data visualisation of earthquakes around the world. A dataset on earthquake size and locations or other extreme events eg cyclones would be an interesting data set for upper primary students to work with (and could be linked to science curriculum)

What does a balanced technology user look like?

Task 2: Data- Patterns & Play  -

I think an interesting thing ask for data collection and display for a teacher PD would be asking a difficult mental maths problem (eg. 18 x 6) and having teachers record how they found the answer (eg. My working mentally would be 10 x 6 = 60 then add 8 x 6 = 48).
You can then collect data about how many strategies were used and how many people used each strategy. Teachers could then experiment with digital ways to display the data. (Credit to the book Mathematical Mindsets, by Jo Boaler for my interest in the different way people solve a problem like this.)

Task 1: Introducing DTs  -

Before I became a teacher I trained as a geophysicist - at the time it was a field just beginning to benefit from new technologies for mapping, including mapping below the earth's surface. I looked up some of the ways technology is being used in this field now and found this article about sea floor mapping.

Other technologies, like drones, that are shown in other posts below could contribute to very interactive maps showing different views and layers.

#cserTask1 #science #geology
The Earth's seafloor is far more diverse than previously thought, with the first digital map of the planet's deep sea geological seascape revealing a kaleidoscope of diversity.

What amazing creativity! I'm sure that she will look back at these pictures when she grows up and will love them as much as we do today.

learning as I go
Introduction
Growing up I spent my fair share of hours finding hideaways for reading, roaming the neighbourhood, swimming laps in the pool and catching various bugs, lizards, crabs and other critters. I went on to get a Bachelor of Science and worked for a while as a geophysicist.

These days, I’m the mum of 2 great boys and a teacher of 20 more young children. My wish for these children is that they become creative, resilient, risk-taking learners. How will I inspire them to become that if I am not living like that myself?
