Charles de Gaulle was born on 22 November 1890 to a Catholic family in Lille. He graduated from a military school and went to fight in WW1. After the war, he married Yvonne Vendroux, also a Catholic and the couple had three children: Philippe, Elisabeth and Anne.

When the Germans invaded France in 1940, the de Gaulles escaped to the UK where de Gaulle established the Free French Forces and called for the French to fight against Germany. He returned to France in 1944 and walked down the Champs Elysees in a victory march after the liberation of Paris.

He became the President of France from 1959 to 1969. He passed away on 9 November 1970. Whilst he was admired during WW2, his presidency had been criticised by some people who felt that he was being too conservative and some foreign leaders complained he was too arrogant.

Oh well, I have to admit I admire him for his bravery and as a Christian, I would say that he is a role model for me, since he was a devout Catholic and lived according to his beliefs. (I'm Christian but I respect those who aren't.)

Vive la France!
