It's finally time for the "average PC user" to seriously consider a Chromebook.
If you don't need Windows specific apps and you spend almost all your computer time in a browser, a Chromebook may well be the right choice for you.
My wife uses the browser almost exclusively on her 2011 Macbook Pro. If that great machine eventually dies, I'll probably buy her a mid-high end Chromebook. It needs to be lightweight, fast, and have a great screen and sound. Macbooks have this, but there are Chromebooks that provide it in a simpler package. With the advent of Android app support, she'll be able to play all the new games if she wants to.
