If you’ve seen Police Academy, you know of Michael Winslow’s talents. He played Cadet Larvell Jones and wowed the world with his vocal impersonations.
Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure Winslow gave me my first demonstration of the capabilities of a beat boxer. Fitting that he now makes a reapparance in the most impressive beat boxing performance I’ve ever seen.
Comment A: "I don't think even Herman Cain deserves to see the seedy underbelly of this old racial animus."
Comment B: "...Yes he does. For his Limbaugh-like race baiting, Cain deserves it. For his anti-Muslim/Sharia law fear mongering, he deserves it. For his serial sexual harassment, he deserves it. "
Comment C: "But is it worth reinforcing the "dangerous sexual animal black man" trope that the media will end up pushing, if it decides to take the accusations seriously? Any satisfaction that can be derived from seeing a panderer punished will not be enough to outweigh a narrative that has been pushed for centuries that we're barely started getting rid of. ..."
Pause and consider though the reference to Native American cultures in the fictitious group being the "Pawnee Goddesses" (name of town is "Pawnee") and their pledge starting "I am a Goddess, a glorious female warrior". A problem I see is referencing this culture and stereotypical images of it without knowing anything further about it. Pawnee are matrilineal, but this isn't mentioned in the episode I believe.
Also, there's this tidbit about the history of the Pawnee:
"Typically, a warrior [male] would dream of the Morning Star, usually in the autumn, which meant it was time to prepare for the various steps of the ritual. The visionary would consult with the Morning Star priest, who helped him prepare for his journey to find a sacrifice. With help from others, the warrior would capture a young unmarried girl from an enemy tribe." ...And then they would sacrifice her. (wikipedia)
So ya, maybe not so appropriate to conjure up stereotypical imagery of a group whose actual history does not even match up well with the values you're trying to promote. Romanticizing Native American cultures and ignoring their histories is another form of erasure.
(Maybe not best, but it made me want to jump up and dance"
in response to: "... If a white person on this forum had made a similar statement, I think they would not only be promptly attacked, but you would likely have no problem with it.
Double standards breed ill will; they don't fix anything."
Comment: "Probably not, but that's because white people hold most of the money, political power and legitimate violence."
