The grocery store doesn’t sell anything that comes in a disposable box, bag, jar, or other container. It ditches the traditional supermarket model of shelf after shelf of packaged convenience foods for one that gives shoppers grains in bulk bins, attractively displayed produce that’s not shrink-wrapped or stored in tetra packs, and beverage stations just waiting for refillable bottles.

The store is the brainchild of Sara Wolf and Milena Glimbovski, two Germany-based social impact innovators. They write on the project’s site that they want consumers to have a choice about how much food they buy as well as how much waste it creates.

Feeding the neighbourhood?
(NL onder)
Nice article about the rise of sharing meals with people in your neighbourhood in Europe. But I think this list is not complete. For instance in the Netherlands there is http://www.thuisafgehaald.nl.
This site is also available in other countries. (see the country button at the top left corner of the website)

Are there more missing from the list?

Thuisafgehaald.be.
Helaas ontbrak de Nederlandse variant: +Thuis afgehaald.

Zijn er meer initiatieven die ontbreken?

(... And of course there is #FoodSwap. But as that is more about sending home made stuff by mail, it is something different I think.)

Food: Waste not want not

Would you eat a stranger's leftover lunch? Across Europe, apps and websites that distribute excess food are edging into the mainstream as both start-ups and charities join the sharing economy trend.

If you are hungry in Hungary, you could do a lot worse than tucking into one of Judit Szilagyi's dishes.

When the 26-year-old student gets home from university, she spends her evenings roasting spicy vegetables, mashing creamy potatoes or frying sweet pancakes.

She posts photos of her food on a new Budapest-based app, which allows her followers to request a portion for themselves. http://bbc.in/1kcUDFa

Salad with strawberries??
That’s a nice thought..

Winner winner, chicken dinner

Tonight's dinner was a one pan affair (if you don't count the rice cooker).  Jeffrey went for a bike ride today, so needed uncomplicated fuel that was going to be easy on his digestive tract.  As luck would have it, I found a whole organic chicken greatly marked down, far cheaper than buying already butchered parts. AND we'll have legs and wings for fried chicken tomorrow night, and a carcass for blonde stock.

I seasoned the breasts with salt, pepper and Old Bay seasoning, panfried and transferred to a parchment-lined sheet pan to finish in a 325 oven. Carrots done in the same pan with shallots and garlic.
a 1 minute yogurt vinaigrette for salad with some za'atar - its how we get dinner on the table in <30 minutes.

A new scientific publication of the Séralini study... Does it mean that we can have a real debate about all the studies concerning the use of GMO and pesticides?

#Seralini #GMO #Monsanto #RoundUp

Séralini study republished.
(NL onder)
"GMOSeralini.org welcomes the news of the republication ') of the chronic toxicity study on the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup and a commercialized genetically modified (GM) maize, Monsanto’s NK603, led by Prof Gilles-Eric Séralini. The republication restores the study to the peer-reviewed literature so that it can be consulted and built upon by other scientists." '')

I wonder how the reactions will be. One thing is for sure. The Séralini study includes all data now, making it possible to check, where most opposite (industrial) studies lack that transparency.

"Butter coffee is the brainchild of US-based Dave Asprey who says he stumbled upon the notion of a unusually fatty highly caffeinated drink while trekking in Tibet where tea is traditionally made with yak butter.
So impressed was he by the physically and mentally agile monks he met on his Tibetan travels that he decided to emulate their diet and believes he has now found the silver bullet for overweight people."

Coffee and (milk) fats are not so strange as it looks in the first place. A lot of people like Irish coffee, what contains a lot of cream. And don't forget the coffee cream that is used in a lot of countries.

Myself, I only take my 'Koffie Verkeerd' ') with whole milk. Preferably creamy raw milk and is not homogenised.

Ever thought of making icecubes like this?? ;-)

One beautiful way to dress your ice cubes is to put fruits or edible flowers in the water before freezing. This way your ice-cubes will look gorgeous and add colour to your drink. - See more at: http://www.dimasharif.com/2010/09/iced-teas-cool-you-down-but-right-ones.html#sthash.kgrbwea2.dpuf

Ijs met hazelnootboter? Euh? Bedoel je bruingekleurde boter? En dat in roomijs? Jawel. Are you sure? Yes, I am!

Story
Tagline
Van alles over koken en voedsel. All about cooking and food.
Introduction

Welcome to the ‘landing’-page of the (Dutch) community for food and everything around that.

This page (and the community) started ‘Dutch-only’. But over time it turned out that there were quite a lot of English posts. A lot of articles about global and foreign developments are English. And many recipes had an English orign. Some time ago I started to change the comunity in Dutch and English sections. Some sections use both languages. And others (like the recipes) are kept seperate.

The community started with this page. I just wanted to share some things about food seperate from my account, to keep them together. But some time ago Google+ gave us communities and it is much nicer to share these things together.

On this page I share just a selection of posts of the community to give you an impression of what you can find there. If you like it, you can join. By defaut new posts of the community will show on you main stream. But if you rather read them only if you visit the community, you can turn that of in the settings of the community.
