'Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!!!' That's the emergency distress call that the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is helping to reduce the number of on Europe's seas. EMSA helps to improve our maritime safety by analysing accident investigation reports and producing maritime casualty statistics that can feed into better practices and technological improvements. Check out for example the European Marine Casualty Information Platform (EMCIP) database now catalogued on the #EUOpenData Portal, among many other new datasets from EMSA: bit.ly/EMCIP

It's International Day of Older Persons, #IODP2016, also in the EU! There are 27 million people aged over 80 today in the EU. But that will be 54 million 30 years from now with their share effectively doubling. More data for information and analysis with for example the keywords 'old age', 'pension', 'population' or 'retirement': data.europa.eu/euodp

Also EU celebrates the World Maritime Day 2016 - Shipping: indispensable to the world!

And as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says: "The importance of shipping in supporting and sustaining today's global society makes it indispensable to meeting the challenge of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

Today the Summaries team would like to focus on the Bunkers Convention, adopted under the auspices of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

This convention aims at ensuring adequate, prompt & effective compensation for those who suffer damage caused by spills of oil carried as fuel in ships’ bunkers.
