Is privacy just an anomaly of our society, which will disapear again soon, or is it an important part in the process of democracy?

Interestingly enough, the right to privavy was not recognized by the US Supreme Court until 1967... That's not that long ago:
The “right to privacy” was not coined until 1890, by future Chief Justice Louis Brandeis. The right to privacy would not be recognized by the Supreme Court until the landmark 1967 case, Katz v. The United States.
