Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come. Robert H. Schuller

How does smoking affect your programming ability?

Answer:
First, it depends on what he's smoking. I assume you're referring to cigarettes, in which case it could be the break itself (walking away from problems for a while is an effective way of solving them) or the nicotine from smoking. Nicotine is a mental stimulant which increases the levels of dopamine being released in the brain, and could therefore give smokers a "boost" in mental performance. However, this is unlikely to contribute to extensive problem solving, as the effects if nicotine diminish within minutes. Another possible (but unlikely) reason could be due to nicotine addiction. Some smokers actually perform more poorly when they are deprived of nicotine, so perhaps his performance after smoking is his actual level of performance, and no nicotine is hindering him. The third (and most likely reason) is that he's walking away from his problems for a few minutes and returning to them after taking a break. You would be surprised at what effect this has on performance. Quite often, people who spend too much time looking at something or working on something are more likely to make errors. I once read in an article that our brain subconsciously tries to solves problems when we take a break from our work. In returning after taking your mind off of something, you are less stressed and have refreshed your mind, and may be more prone to discover an alternate approach towards a solution that you might have missed earlier on.
