I'm at FOSDEM! If you want to say hi in person, give me a shout and we can make it happen. You'll definitely catch me in the Mozilla dev room before and after my talk on parallel web browser development at 3.

Per-window private browsing for Firefox is happening, and the tracking metabug recently hit the "20 open tasks without patches" milestone. The vast majority of these are JS-based, with a couple C++ ones - this is a great way to leave your mark on a hotly-anticipated feature, so get in touch with me if you want to be a part of it!

I love living in the future!

VMWare using HTML5 to access virtualized desktops!

That is impressive! You don't even need plugins to do remote desktop to any VMWare instance with WSX. WSX is built with standard HTML5 technologies, mainly with Canvas and WebSockets for communication.

Nice to see people take advantage of the web! It is cool to see how developers produce complex applications that spans multiple platforms with just the Web! No more plugins!

Karl Schroeder explains why our solar system is not filled with alien probes at this moment.
Okay, Keith B. Wiley's new paper does have a somewhat daunting title: The Fermi Paradox, Self-Replicating Probes, and the Interstellar Transportation Bandwidth. But it's a pretty easy read and hugely well worth it--because in this paper Wiley provides what may be the clearest discussion yet of the core puzzle Fermi first proposed sixty-two years ago: if alien technological civilization is even possible, then they should be here; at the very least...

Bear McCreary harnesses the power of the accordion to recreate one of the best and most complex songs from the BSG soundtrack.

"She was blind from before the age of one, the result of an accident. Her father taught her to read with a wooden alphabet; she mastered Latin, French and German as well as mathematics, philosophy and theology. She also took up music, in Hawkins’s words, ‘as a relief to her severer studies’, singing, playing the harpsichord and composing." - from a biography of Esther Elizabeth Velkiers, a Swiss composer from the Baroque period.

Yeah, I a bit like an academic lightweight right now.
