After watching last night's interview on CBS 60 Minutes with Leslie Stahl and Donald Trump, this is where I am at this juncture.

The Faculty of Scientific Model-Based Reasoning

H₀ (Null Hypothesis) Our species, Homo Sapiens, natively has the faculty of learning and employing the Scientific Faculty of Model-Based Reasoning. This includes such language-based varieties as Similes, Metaphors, Analogies, Allegories, Fables, Parables, and such math-logical based varieties as Games, Simulations, Technical Models, Computer Models, and Mathematical Models.

H₁ (Working Hypothesis #1) Our species, Homo Sapiens, natively has the faculty of learning and employing the Scientific Faculty of Model-Based Reasoning, as in H₀, but only a limited few varieties are available in the public school curriculum.

H₂ (Working Hypothesis #2) The faculty of Model-Based Reasoning has a genetic component such that not all individuals in the general population natively have the aptitude for acquiring, developing, or mastering the faculties of Model-Based Reasoning.

H₃ (Working Hypothesis #3) The faculty of Scientific Model-Based Reasoning is significantly limited by a rare genetically inherited aptitude which may be specific to selected methods of expression (e.g. verbal, logical, mathematical, musical, artistic, or body-kinesthetic).

H₄ (Working Hypothesis #4) The faculty of Imitation may be a weak variety of Model-Based Representation.

H₅ (Working Hypothesis #5) The faculty of Imitation may initially manifest itself at best in jejune, lame, and inaccurate examples of mockery.

H₆ (Working Hypothesis #6) Donald Trump exemplifies the case of H₅.

H₇ (Working Hypothesis #7) Donald Trump’s base appreciates and aspires to rise to the level of H₅.

H₈ (Working Hypothesis #8) None of H₀ through H₇ have merit.

H₉ (Working Hypothesis #9) None of H₀ through H₈ apply to Donald Trump.

Exercise: What evidence can we muster to either affirm or falsify each and every hypothesis from H₀ through H₉?

What exercises or experiments can we devise and perform to sharpen up our evidence for and against each hypothesis?

Which hypothesis, if any, survives the rigors of the protocols of the scientific method?

Are we now ready for systemic change in the crumbling architecture of Western Civilization?

Are we now ready for a seismic paradigm shift, so as to acquire and apply the aptitudes and faculties of systems thinking to solve humankind’s long-festering Systemic Problems: Conflict, Violence, Oppression, Injustice, Corruption, Poverty, Ignorance, Alienation, Abuse, Despair, Suffering, and Terrorism.

Neuro-Mathematical Systems Theology

Deities die when the people stop believing in them.

I stopped believing in the police culture more than 30 years ago, when a local police detective in Lincroft NJ candidly admitted to me, “The whole system is rotten.” He was referring to the deeply embedded and increasingly ossified and corrupt infrastructure and machinery of the Rule of Law.

When one deity dies, a new one rises to supersede the previous heroes of cultural apotheosis.

If I had to give my religion a name, I’d call it Neuro-Mathematical Systems Theology. My heroic deities are the pioneers of systems thinking.

The Trump Administration is dramatically reifying and highlighting a long list of traumatic abuses that have been chronicled for millennia in the annals of history, literature, scriptures, legends, myths, fables, plays, ballads, novels, and operas.

These same recurring abuses have also been studied and documented by sociologists, psychologists, criminologists, cultural anthropologists, humorists, and journalists.

Even my own arcane discipline — Systems Science — has been applying its modern mathematical methods of modeling and analysis to these classical issues in human systems.

It’s going to take a seismic paradigm shift in the architecture of Western Civilization to address and solve these long-recurring problems.

The good news is that it doesn’t take all that much in the way of a decent 20th Century education to discover the well-tested and well-proven architecture of a reliably well-behaved and well-regulated system.

Paradigm Shift

There is a paradigm shift that has been emerging with the introduction of the Internet into human culture.

For the past four or five thousand years, humans have adopted a Rule-Based Model for socio-political self-regulation.

Sometimes the rules were said to come from Divine Sources, as expounded and promulgated by Monarchs or Theologians. Giambattista Vico noted a 3-phase cycle among a triumvirate of authorities.

The Viconian cycle consists of three recurring phases:

(1) The Theocratic or Divine Age, represented in primitive society by the family life of the cave, to which the thunderous voice of God has driven mankind;

(2) The Aristocratic or Heroic Age, characterized by incessant conflict between the ruling patricians and their subject plebeians;

(3) The Democratic Age, in which rank and privilege have finally been eradicated by the revolutions of the preceding age.

Currently, we are ensnared in the Fourth Age, as anticipated by Vico, and as explicated by any number of modern sources:

(4) The Chaotic Age, characterized by the bewildering collapse of democratic society, which is inherently dysfunctional and therefore riddled with a panoply of hellish and baffleplexing problems: conflict, violence, oppression, injustice corruption, poverty, ignorance, alienation, abuse, despair, suffering, and terrorism.

The resolution of this nightmare age of unrelenting chaos is to evolve to the Fifth Age where we master the art of taming the ill-mannered recursion laws that define and characterize the Chaotic Age:

(5) The Cybernetic Age, in which the otherwise mind-boggling math of recursive loops is tamed and tuned to gracefully converge to the long-dreamed-of Omega Point.

To emerge from the Chaotic Age and evolve into the Cybernetic Age, we are going to have to conscientiously educate ourselves in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with a concentrated effort to master the fractious mathematics of recursive systems.

The key to mastering the Fifth Age is to embrace the Fifth Discipline of Peter Senge. The key is to master Systems Thinking.

Once STEM fully integrates Systems Thinking into our tools for thought, we can then team up with Artists who can shape this work for public consumption as part of the evolving Canon of Western Media. Once STEM is teamed up with the Artistry, we’ll be on our way to the Cybernetic Age with a full head of STEAM.

So, how does the emergence of the Internet help pave the way?

The Internet introduced a major paradigm shift that evolved above and beyond the traditional Rule-Based Paradigm.

Here is the progression embraced by the architecture of the Internet:

1. Heap of Rules ~ The stuff of children’s games as played by scheming adults

2. Suite of Protocols ~ Carefully crafted sequences of agile rules with feedback and alternate branchings

3. Library of Functions ~ Continuously variable responses employing the mathematical tools of the Calculus (e.g. Gradients and Optimization)

4. Collection of Models ~ Collections of Functions instantiating a System Model

5. Ecology of Systems ~ The application of Cybernetic Concepts to the overall architecture and functioning of a complex system comprised of multiple interacting sub-systems and components.

Employing and applying the tools for thought of Systems Thinking, we can begin to make real progress in solving humankind’s long-festering Systemic Problems: Conflict, Violence, Oppression, Injustice, Corruption, Poverty, Ignorance, Alienation, Abuse, Despair, Suffering, and Terrorism.

Yesterday, Americans celebrated the life of John McCain, who died of Brain Cancer last week.

In 2005, McCain published his best-seller, Character Is Destiny. Yesterday's Eulogies of John McCain spoke eloquently of his Character.

Back in 2005, about the time McCain's book came out, I was also thinking about the Role of Character in Drama. McCain's notion was one of the touch points in this essay, in which I ruminated on the underlying theory connecting Character to Destiny.
