Story
Introduction
I'm a computer programmer. I live and breathe programming and I'm excited running a company together with friends that is valued by our customers for the technical expertise, honesty and forward-thinking that we like to do.

My programming has taken various forms over time from regular developer to full-time system administrator.

I'm currently trying to advance our take on the hosting and operations of Python web applications based on virtualization and automation. My guess is that we need to meet in the middle between PaaS and IaaS to find a ground where developers and operators can meet.

Liebes Finanzamt,

Geir, "just punished financially" are to soft words. It's a huge diffrence for a little merchant if you get the money for send items or not.

I had many discussions about 3d-secure. But since we, as a merchant, enabled this feature the loss rate due to stolen credit card goes down to something between zero and acceptable.

Some more details: A webshop (or better his payment provider) can only request a 3d-secure result from visa. If he do so, then visa forward this request to customers card issuing bank (you can easily see that in the URL and the poor designed window). So, 3d-secure is more a kind of communication between card holder and his issuing bank. Only thing a merchant is doing to force this card-holder<->bank verification. The reason why nearly all webshops will enable 3d-secure for credit card payments is the liability shift. Meaning: if credit card holder complains that this order wasn't processed by his own and therefore obvious fraud the merchant still get his money. If card issuing bank see that the 3d-secure pin was entered correctly they will charge the customer, if not or if theft was able to process with skipping then they have to pay the bill.

I totally agree, that the current PIN model is poor. But to improve that mechanism is kind of homework for all card issuing banks. In other (little faulty) words: With 3d-secure is the bank responsible for security - not the merchant and not the customer.

Providing a sponsor text for PyCon US visitors as a German company with a German homepage seems futile. I'm offering anyone to chat with me at PyCon instead ...

Right. So, apart from all the actual things we do, here's a link to our small configuration tool that boils it down to numbers: http://gocept.com/betreiben/konfigurator

It's actually in partial English. ;)

The currently ongoing Zope security and data protection sprint (mostly for documentation) turns out to result in a couple of CVEs for products that have been programming against the model. "os.system" anyone?
