In the midst of the colossal remains of gladiatorial ampitheatres and some of the world’s largest churches, one might draw the impression that Italians like their things big! But, the smaller, the better is the clear mantra for Romans, when it comes to their vehicles and pets.

One is thrown back and forth in time as one moves between bustling piazzas filled with modern day artists and elaborate bridges with carved figurines from another era. Couples hug, kiss and hold hands. A newly married duo poses for a photoshoot in all their wedding finery in front of the exotic Trevi fountain...

A row of stalls, each filled with colourful artifacts, were lined within the entire compound. Traders watch you like hawks, gauging which of the visitors are potential customers and vying with each other for your attention.

My visits to these markets bring me much closer to reality. Dirt lines the roads. Narrow lanes are clogged with vehicles. Shoppers and traders bargain to the hilt. Beggars vie for your attention. An eight year old girl follows you, trying to sell kitchen cloths...
