EVENING
WORD LIVE-YEAR ONE:
Ruth 2:14-23

Prepare: Our sense of identity can be rooted in all kinds of things – gender, family, ethnicity, class. As you read this passage consider where you get yours from.

Belonging by faith
Boaz noticed Ruth because she worked so hard without taking a rest and he enquired who she was. Ruth asked, ‘Why have I found such favour in your eyes that you notice me – a foreigner?’ (v 10). But Boaz commends her – this is not an issue of race – for she has been faithful and committed.

He speaks of her as one defined by the covenant, taking refuge under the Lord’s wings, where she is now safe. This is emphasised in verse 14 as they eat bread together. Belonging to God is by faith, and this is a relational reality.

God’s providence
Naomi ponders the plan for Boaz to take care of Ruth through a tradition called levirate marriage, whereby a childless widow was married to a male relative of her late husband who could give her a son.

The son would be given the name of the first husband rather than that of his natural father. Could this be God’s providence?

Respond: Make a list of all of the things that identify you: your name, family, biRUTplace, bank account, status, job, achievements, failures. Write over the top of this list: ‘I belong to the Lord’. As you do this, pray and ask God to be the foundation of your life. Turn away from things that hinder him being Lord.

enough
taken from WORD LIVE-YEAR ONE in YOU VERSION. You don’t need to be a prophetess like Deborah or a warrior like Gideon to be part of God’s plan. Faith and obedience are enough. enough: nothing more needed; filled. faith: accepting what one cannot see. obedie...

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 MSG
[16-18] Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.

thanks for the reminder, Daddy! i will practice this simple way of life.

devotional that tells it truthfully from FACE TO FAITH in Holy Bible.

Have you ever been to a costume party? Chances are good that you go to them more often than you think.

Almost all of us wear costumes, so let me tell you about some of the most common costumes people wear these days.

Success. People wear the costumes of cars, fancy houses, jewelry galore, nice clothes, and all the other trimmings. You know what? I’ve talked to a lot of these people and I have discov- ered something. Almost all of them are insecure, wondering the same questions about life that everyone else is wondering. The success and the bling and the sweet rides and the fancy cribs, none of it fills that hole of desire in their hearts.

Beauty. Have you ever been to one of those popular health clubs? They’re packed with people, many of whom are there not for the sake of health, but for the sake of beauty. They want to look good. They want to impress people. And while they are disgusted at being ogled when they walk down the street, they like that they turn heads. Plastic surgeons and Botox clinics make their living by providing these costumes.

Relationships. A lot of people try to hide who they are with the people they choose as friends. “I must be cool; just look at my friends!” They pretend that nothing is wrong while they attend the upscale parties and the fanciest release bashes, or they feel important because their friends are high ranking business or government officials. All of this is a costume.

You want to know the only costume that works? It’s Christ. He’s the only costume that works, because when we put Him on, He changes our heart. And when He changes our heart, it fulfills who we were created to be and we no longer live a pretended life; we can actually live a genuine one.
Would you like a genuine life today? Then put off the costume and put on Christ.

Prayer
Jesus Christ,
I confess that I have worn costumes all my life, trying to make myself look better than I really am. But I know that all of those things are worthless compared to You. I want the genuine life that You offer me. Please come into my life and make me Yours!
Amen

taken from WORD LIVE: YEAR ONE devotion in the HOLY BIBLE app:

Acts 5:29 NIV
[29] Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!

In what areas of life is your obedience to God being challenged?
at this point in my walk with God, God has me pretty much where He wants me: on my knees. the obedience i have learned has enriched my life so much i have strength, wisdom, patience that just happen. i know it God getting me thru something or letting me know the right thing to do or it could be not yelling at the grandkids and patiently handle the situation. whatever it is, God has taught, is teaching, and will continue to teach me obedience thru spending time with Him. the greatest thing we give God is ourselves.

obedience shows God u respect Him and care about God's plan. i still struggle in obeying God. God, however, brings me gently to where He is and allows me to watch and learn. another area of obedience i struggle in is reaching out. God and i r actively working on this.

when u pray the written word over yourself, u cause God to move. obedience gives God cause to give u more. obedience to God in all He asks us to do brings Him such honor, glory and praise. we get to be part of the celebration when obedience is priority in our lives. God prefers obedience over and above sacrifice. obedience reveals the attitude of our heart.

i choose to let God work His obedience into my life.
