My legs were dragging this morning as we headed out to snowshoe for the second day in a row. I wished we were snow biking, and my leg muscles were protesting this new activity. But, Shyla was over the moon happy. Early in our walk, she suddenly sprung into a huge leap for no reason at all.

Snow Play Day
Today was snow play day. Off-trail, the snow was deep. Shyla porpoised through it. Her face was perpetually covered in snow. But it didn't seem to bother her much. She scented for animals as if she wasn't covered in snow. I think that, in the next photo, sh...
But it didn't seem to bother her much. She scented for animals as if she wasn't covered in snow. I think that, in the next photo, she had caught the scent of the moose that we would see soon thereafter. As I tried to ride my snow bike, flailing around like a rookie, Shyla ran with power and ...

A Joyous Sunset Hike
The other afternoon, the Duo and I had one of my favorite afternoon hikes. Both dogs were full of zip and joyousness. R ran with abandon. And the setting sun cast a warm hue on all of us. Unlike one day recently , there were no moose occupying our favorite ...
And the setting sun cast a warm hue on all of us. Unlike one day recently, there were no moose occupying our favorite sunset spot so we could play there. We now have two pairs of mothers and their calves in our neck of the woods but they've been docile and nearly invisible recently.

Old Man Winter Returns
Old Man Winter has returned. After weeks of mostly warmth and sunshine, we've had more than a foot of snow fall in the past 24 hours. It was even hard to churn the wheels of my new fat bike through this fresh snow. It was just too deep. Shyla wasn't slowed....

Since it's Valentine's Day, our Blogville Mayors have asked us to post something related to wildlife and this holiday. Because bears have the most visible patterns of mating and raising their young, I thought that I'd tell you about what I've observed of bear mating season and cub raising.

Wintertime: Snow, moose, and mountain lions
Yesterday, I told you that Shyla and I saw a moose cow-calf pair near the end of our ride. Fortunately, Shyla was very mellow when we finally saw them because she'd been playing in the snow non-stop for a while. And, just before we saw the moose, we'd been ...
Yesterday, I told you that Shyla and I saw a moose cow-calf pair near the end of our ride. Fortunately, Shyla was very mellow when we finally saw them because she'd been playing in the snow non-stop for a while. And, just before we saw the moose, we'd been practicing some of her tricks so her ...

Snowy Sunday
The snow storm has not disappointed us. Shyla had already fallen into a drift within 100 yards of our house, and her face was covered in snow. It's hard to guess how much has fallen so far due to how much snow was already on the ground. However, I can say w...
It's hard to guess how much has fallen so far due to how much snow was already on the ground. However, I can say with certainty that this is the most snow we've had on the ground so far this winter. Shyla was like the energizer bunny this morning, dashing back and forth as I plodded along on my ...

Pitfalls of an intense dog with physical limitations
Our black dog, R, is an intense character. He runs with wild exuberance and abandon. Running lets him be a mellow and relaxed dog in the rest of his life. His mental intensity can be managed by physical exercise and mental challenges (like teaching him tric...
His mental intensity can be managed by physical exercise and mental challenges (like teaching him tricks). Of those two, being able to run is the most important to R's mental health. Without it, his tendency toward obsessive-compulsive behavior becomes stronger.

Black Dog Sunday
From the recent dry and sunny spell... And, since it's finally snowing again, here's our black dog after a recent snowstorm! Rolling in the snow is one of his favorite things to do but he doesn't let me get good photos of it. He's coming up for air after a ...

The past month has been surprising, much more like spring than winter. Thus, we haven't had much snow beauty but we've had lots of fun playing in the forest. Although they scare me, the arrival of moose at our elevation has been a huge change to our world. They are beautiful, yet goofy.

I'm avid outdoors person. I love observing nature and playing with my Labs out in the forest.
Introduction
I live at 8200' in the Front Range of Colorado. I love exploring nature in the mountains while riding my mountain bike and romping with my two Labradors. Photography is another passion, including both "normal" photography and trail camera photography of wildlife.

My two dogs are Shyla, a 3-year-old Chocolate Lab, and R, a 7-year-old Black Lab.

I have a blog where I describe my adventures and share my photography: "Romping and Rolling in the Rockies".
