the Internet is a horrible horrible invention for those trying to resist seduction by leather straps

That's pretty nice since half of the time I don't use a strap at all. (When I do I use a shoulder strap, not a neck strap - essentially a re-purposed rifle sling.

Accepting our share of the responsibility.

This reminds me of the 'Unbearable Lightness of Being' where Kundera recounts the denoument of the Greek tragedy when Oedipus gouges his eyes out in atonement for the crime of sleeping with his own mother. As the king he is responsible for the health of the land, and the land has suffered from his misdeed. He could excuse himself, because he had no foreknowledge that it was his mother he was sleeping with, but he chooses to accept responsibility instead.

I wonder if Oedipus would have punished himself so cruelly, if he hadn't witnessed the suffering of the land and the people?

He assumed a truly awesome level of responsibility that is beyond our comprehension today, and certainly beyond the job description of our leaders.

There's an amazing scene in the movie version of Kundera's story where the main character is in Switzerland by Lake Geneva with lovely white swans backlit by reflected sunlight. He has escaped Czechoslovakia before the Russians closed the border, putting an end to the Prague Spring.

But the beauty and the lightness of his freedom becomes unbearable when he thinks of what is happening back home where Russian occupation destroys what is beautiful and free. It's a grim scene when he hands his passport back to Russian guards at the border, and returns to the scene of the crimes.

As long as we can maintain a facade of lightness, knowing what we know (or at least what we should know), we will never change. Until we take responsibility, stop absolving ourselves by blaming our leaders - our desire for ease and comfort will continue to create disaster.
