Here's a video I produced last summer about our lake-view, lake-access Sandy Cottage vacation rental. It is adjacent to, but separate from, the B&B. We furnish it to the same high standards. In summer it rents by the week, with arrivals as early as 1 p.m. on Mondays. For one or two persons, a week costs $1,410. Add $15 per person per day for additional people, up to six total.

We just harvested the last of the roses in our garden. The season is longer here because Lake Huron takes so long to cool down. But finally it has.

Luxury meets laid-back on a quiet Lake Huron beach.

Relaxing on the sunny back deck of our boat, one of only four transient vessels in the Mackinac Island Harbor, I marvel at the way Labor Day draws a curtain on Michigan summer travel for most people. On the way north from Port Huron, we passed three sailboats; that's it. As an innkeeper on Lake Huron, I wish I could change people's mindset about post-Labor Day getaways. As a perennial September traveler, I say: Hey, fewer people; more choices for me.

Someone asked how I package the half-bars of soap that I place in guest room showers. Here's one. Making the soap tags is something I enjoy doing during a movie-watching night in the off-season. This bar is vanilla scented. The vanilla turns the soap a chocolate color, so the soap maker -- Company Soap in Algonac, MI -- calls it Vanilla Fudge. Each guest bathroom gets one bar every couple days, so guests don't have an opportunity to compare "flavors." But all the varieties I choose are only very mildly scented. A number of guests subsequently order from the company.

Has anyone used Dudamobile to create a free mobile site? If so, what do you like and not like? What are the main reasons for upgrading to the paid version? Will the traffic show up in Google Analytics? I spent a couple minutes on the site and was impressed by how easy it seems to set up, but then I wondered: What's the catch? Why would this be free?

The ice on our slice of Lake Huron shoreline hasn't been this interesting in a couple years. One of these photos made me think of the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written. Alas, I couldn't see any chiseled letters.

Normally it's a sad thing when a tree dies, but not when its death provides an opportunity to improve the view. iMovie makes it so easy to assemble photos and movie clips into a somewhat polished-looking video.

Employing the ice cream dishes we picked up at a vintage gifts gallery in Port Austin, we served this winter fruits display to guests yesterday. The sweetness of Honeybell oranges contrasted with the sharpness of ruby red grapefruit.

Winter storm Nemo had our area hunkered down as it blew through on Friday, but today was sunny and beautiful. Here's the beach scene about 3 p.m. Shortly afterward, two tundra swan scouts flew by, skimming just over the ice as they checked out conditions in advance of next month's annual migration.
