Practicing 21st Century Photography
Introduction
I earned my BFA in Photography from Ohio State in 1999, and my MFA in Photography from The University of Colorado at Boulder in 2005. I currently have 6-years post-graduate teaching experience working full time, year round.

I am also a fine artist, specializing in toy and pinhole cameras, with personal ambitions to exhibit and sell my work. I plan to continue balancing teaching with creating art in the foreseeable future.

I enjoy "Practicing 21st Century Photography"; in other words I use a variety of camera capture systems that range from pinhole to cell phones, combined with digital and wet processes to create the final object. I enjoy working across three centuries of photographic technology; this affords me many exciting new opportunities of image creation.

One of my favorite pastimes, making Cyanotype sheets! Come see the finished sheet hanging in the show "Computer Obscura" June 5-July 21 in the John A. Jellico Gallery at the Art Institute of Colorado.

"Computer Obscura: A 21st Century Photography Invitational"
John A. Jellico Gallery
June 5 - July 21, 2013, Opening Reception: Friday, June 7, 4:30-7pm

Description:
“21st Century Photography - a vision driven form of photography which freely combines historic methods, alternative processes, and adaptive techniques to create something new.” -Tom Persinger, f295.org

The 21st Century Photography Invitational at The Art Institute of Colorado John A. Jellico Gallery celebrates the work of selected Denver area artists embracing the philosophy outlined by the organization f295. These artists are all utilizing a variety of photographic technology combined with modern conceptual practice, to create new and unique forms of image production that otherwise would not exist. All artists in the show are nearing, or have recently graduated from, photography programs at The Art Institute of Colorado and The University of Colorado at Denver, and represent a talented group of emerging young creatives just entering the professional field. Also exhibited are selected works created by students from the AiC Special Topics Class on 21st Century Photography taught by Todd A. Dobbs during Spring quarter 2013.

Blast from the past! I found this old pinhole shot I took with a paint can pinhole camera while teaching a pinhole workshop to 8-12 year old students at COSI in Columbus, Ohio back in 2001. I took the liberty of posting the original paper negative as well as the positive.

Just returned from SPE 2013 in Chicago, IL reinvigorated as a photographer and educator. The weekend was filled with great presentations, highlighted by a poignant speech by Martin Parr. The event sold out with 1,600 attendees, a packed exhibitors fair, and two solid days of portfolio reviews for students and professionals. And of course at the end of the event the infamous SPE Dance Party capped off the best national conference I have attended since joining in 1998!

See everyone next year in Baltimore!

Last week I was honored to have Denis Roussel visit my Photographic Materials & Processes class and do an Ambrotype demo using his 8x10 view camera. The students insisted I sit for one of the portraits. Keep in mind this was a 30-seond exposure looking directly into a bank of 20+ lights, I did my best to keep my eyes open, but as those who witnessed the shoot can attest, they were twitching and watering by the end (hence my uncharacteristic expression in the resulting image). The ghost image at the bottom is of my iPhone that I was using to video the camera while it was photographing me. Enjoy!

It amazes me how far technology has come, but as a photographer I can't help feel that the machine is marginalizing my role as creator, or is this just another stage in the evolution of our medium? Are we now free to explore new uses of our medium? Exciting and scary!

Wow, that is somewhat intimidating.

Class photo taken with a paint can pinhole camera using the new Ilford Direct Positive Paper (I fogged it with safe lights that were too bright, oops!). In the far left and right you can make out my ghost image, as I spent half of the exposure on each side of the frame.

I had the opportunity to make a couple of Cyanotype sheets this week, special thanks to +Wes Price for giving me an excuse to so these. One is for his wedding reception this weekend, the other I make with my Materials & Processes class to start off our new quarter!

The exposures for both sheets was 25-minutes in direct sunlight.

Nice!  I'd like to do this with a photo class I will be leading at a non-profit center in the near future.
