Try to praise the mutilated world.
Remember June’s long days,
and wild strawberries, drops of wine, the dew.
The nettles that methodically overgrow
the abandoned homesteads of exiles.
You must praise the mutilated world.
You watched the stylish yachts and ships;
one of them had a long trip ahead of it,
while salty oblivion awaited others.
You’ve seen the refugees heading nowhere,
you’ve heard the executioners sing joyfully.
You should praise the mutilated world.
Remember the moments when we were together
in a white room and the curtain fluttered.
Return in thought to the concert where music flared.
You gathered acorns in the park in autumn
and leaves eddied over the earth’s scars.
Praise the mutilated world
and the gray feather a thrush lost,
and the gentle light that strays and vanishes
and returns.
—Adam Zagajewski

The article/book review provides a clarifying perspective on gender and other social biases. Social bias gives rise to privilege. Understanding social bias in terms of currents may help ease the defensiveness that many feel when confronted with the word 'privilege'. I'm adding Shankar Vedantam's The Hidden Brain to my to-read list.

"Those who travel with the current will always feel they are good swimmers; those who swim against the current may never realize they are better swimmers than they imagine." - Shankar Vedantam, The Hidden Brain

"Good people are not those who lack flaws, the brave are not those who feel no fear, and the generous are not those who never feel selfish. Extraordinary people are not extraordinary because they are invulnerable to unconscious biases. They are extraordinary because they choose to do something about it." - Shankar Vedantam, The Hidden Brain

The Reality of This Moment.

What's the reality of your moment right now?
By Leo Babauta. As you sit here reading this, pause and expand your awareness beyond your computer/phone … what is the reality of this moment? You're reading, and there are a bunch of other tasks you want to do on your computer, yes … but there's also your body. How does that feel?

On Making It Though Tough Journeys.

Life isn't always easy. How do we make it through?
By Leo Babauta. A reader wrote to me about a very tough journey he and his wife are setting out upon, and asked for some words of advice or motivation though this tough time. Difficult times can be a test of our souls, and as such can be some of the most instructive times possible.
