My mother used to say “they will tell a lie when the truth fits in better!”. As a child I never understand what she meant, only that everyone laughed when she said it.

As an adult, I totally get it. Nothing is an empowering as the truth, as inspirational, as healing, as clarifying and as balancing as the truth. And sometimes nothing is as harder to share as the truth. That is why truth and courage go hand in hand.

Cultural values have always been a source of strength for many cultures around the world. Within the Native American community, the tradition of honoring family and elders has continued for centuries. When those among our community are going through a difficult period, it is the responsibility of friends, relatives and even strangers to come together. As human beings, community gives us a powerful bond. Interests, motivations, happiness and health are tied to a feeling that we belong together and share those wonderful parts of ourselves with others.

Even when there are impossible challenges ahead, relying on those around us has great power. It’s what gives us persistence and often heals wounds that no medicine can reach. One important lesson I have learned is that when you feel alone and you don’t belong, every part of your life is affected. You can easily lose your sense of self or purpose and fall into mental illness that undermines your health and well-being.

There are valuable lessons to be learned in joining a community. As we navigate life’s difficult circumstances, we became more able to overcome when others join with us. For example, in praying circles, we talk with the Great Spirit to seek answers and healing for everyone who is in need. Everyone joins together in this prayer, and it makes us closer.

If you are in need or going through a trying period in your life, I invite you to send us a prayer request and join our prayer circle community.

The small things that make up our lives are pleasant and filled with sweet silences that soothe the soul.  But even more commonplace, a lunch, a walk, the companionship of a sweet friend, our dog.
So many little things we take for granted and yet when we pay attention, they all become new.  The garden path, the sound of thunder, and the splat of rain on our hat brim.  It is good medicine for a jaded attitude, good feeling to help us shed the chaos of the day.

"O' Great Spirit
help me always
to speak the truth quietly,
to listen with an open mind
when others speak,
and to remember the peace
that may be found in Silence."
