Parents May Not Realize Certain Foods Can Damage Teeth.
After her five-year-old son needed to have a tooth removed due to decay, the Independent Journal Review (7/15, Hill) reports that a mother in the United Kingdom discovered dried fruit was probably to blame. Dried fruit leaves sticky sugars on teeth, which can lead to dental problems, the article reports, adding that, “according to the American Dental Association, other foods and snacks that can be damaging to the teeth include: sports drinks, hard candies, sodas, citrus fruit, and starchy foods like potato chips, cereal, and popcorn.”
Covering the story, Opposing Views (7/14, Fleming) adds, “One in three 5-year-olds in England has tooth decay, and it is the most common cause of hospital admissions for children ages 5 to 9.”
