Interesting and surprising news from brain research: it looks like the brain's lexicon is distributed around the outer surface, and so far looks mostly consistent between individuals.

This needs much, much more research. So many questions! But if there's truth in this it could be tremendously useful for "mind reading" assistive technologies (give me my brain keyboard! >.<) and perhaps other scarier things.

Very curious to see lots of follow-up work, like:
- Just more data.
- Just how similar are people's individual neutral lexicons, and when they do differ, how?
- Comparisons across languages and cultures, especially where one language has a word for a concept and another does not.
- Studies of multilingual participants.
- Figure out how this ties in with known localized regions for language processing & production. It seems like language is distributed, but also has bottlenecks in specific regions. That sounds interesting, and could potentially speak volumes to the algorithms at work here.

Some speculation: if the layout of the concept space in a human brain is fixed, what does that say about our capacity for novel thought? Is the structure open ended? If so, to what extent?Obviously there's room for novelty in there, but perhaps only within certain bounds? Only new ideas of a certain shape? Or does the organization itself adapt to the ideas it needs to hold?

I can't wait to learn more.
Brain maps constructed by MRI show that language meaning is distributed throughout the brain's outer layer. And it turns out that different people organize language in similar ways.

it's like JSON, but with a more relaxed syntax
Hjson is a configuration file format that caters to humans and helps reduce errors. It's JSON with comments but without trailing comma problems.

Falsehoods programmers believe about Unicode.
I'm assuming, if you are on the Internet and reading kind of a nerdy blog, that you know what Unicode is. At the very least, you have a very general understanding of it — maybe “it's what gives us emoji”. That's about as far as most people's understanding extends, in my experience, ...

Google launches distributed version of its TensorFlow machine learning system

Google today announced the launch of version 0.8 of TensorFlow, its open source library for doing the hard computation work that makes machine learning possible. Normally, a small point update like this wouldn’t be all that interesting, but with this version, TensorFlow can now run the training processes for building machine learning models across hundreds of machines in parallel. This means training complex models using TensorFlow won’t take days or even weeks, but often only hours. The company says distributed computing has long been one of the most requested features for TensorFlow and with this, Google is essentially making the technology that powers much of its recently announced hosted Google Cloud Machine Learning platform available to all developers.

Fisch ist in der Speisekarte als "ohne Fleisch" angeschrieben. Es handelt sich jedoch um echten Fisch der nicht auf Bäumen und Sträuchern wächst. Die Speisen sind also falsch deklariert.

Total super Salatauswahl.
