There once was a woman who lived by the sea. She was not very young, and she was not very old. She made decorative...

+Jen Manna, I'm shocked that you'd tell a queer woman of color that the content she created that strives to foster a better, more feminist culture is not "activism" or welcome in your group...and that it belongs in a fantasy group. I guess this isn't a "feminist" group that practices inclusivity or intersectionality. This is why people rail against us as feminists. Your privilege is showing, and you should be ashamed of yourself. But don't worry, I'll excuse myself from your group now.

My +Bitch Flicks review of #OrphanBlack. A kickass show with kickass #clones. Who could want more? #scifi #fem2
Spoiler Alert. Canada's compelling show Orphan Black will be airing its second season on BBC America this spring, and though Ms Misanthropia reviewed it on Bitch Flicks, I had to weigh in now that I've finally had a chance to finish watching the series! Orphan Black is gritty sci-fi with layered ...

My latest +Bitch Flicks review of +Disney's newest animated film #Frozen . Looks like Disney took some notes on how to make a #feminist film!
Spoiler Alert. Frankly, I was surprised by Disney's latest animated film Frozen. Even though it featured the voice of my beloved heroine Veronica Mars (or as she's known in real life: Kristen Bell), I was pretty sure Frozen was going to feed us Disney's standard company line about princesses and ...

HOLY SHIT! My #Gravity review on +Bitch Flicks was cited & linked in the +The Atlantic! I just died.
Asking whether a new Swedish rating system based on the Bechdel test can evaluate a film's feminism exposes the problems with labeling a film "feminist" in the first place.

My #Halloween +Bitch Flicks review of Birth of the Living Dead (a documentary about the making of #zombie classic Night of the Living Dead) written with Max Thorton.
Bitch Flicks writers Max Thornton and Amanda Rodriguez discuss both the documentary (BOTLD) and the original film itself (NOTLD): MT: I spent my teens as an ardent fan of all things zombie (and I have a lot of theories about what this says about my relationship to embodiment as a trans person, ...

I write/edit for a #feminist film/TV review site: +Bitch Flicks. Here's my feminist assessment of the new teen #scifi hit #Divergent.
“Divergent” Poster. Written by Amanda Rodriguez Mild Spoilers. The much-anticipated film Divergent is based on the series of teen sci-fi novels by Veronica Roth dealing with a walled-off, post-apocalyptic Chicago wherein society has divided itself into factions in an effort to create order and ...

My +Bitch Flicks review of the new #LordOfTheRings flick: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Spoiler Alert. My fellow Bitch Flicks writer Rachel Redfern recently posted a review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug that was insightful, and I agree with most of her points. She touches on the discomfort surrounding creating a whole new major character for the film in the form of Tauriel ...

My +Bitch Flicks review of the critically acclaimed #Philomena . #fem2
I wouldn't exactly characterize Stephen Frears much-praised film Philomena as a comedy. I'd describe it as more of a dramatized exposé of the corruption of the Irish Catholic church with moments of levity that give a desolate story warmth and humanity. Philomena is based on the true story of ...

Here's my latest +Bitch Flicks review on my childhood favorite 80's cartoon Jem and the Holograms! Outrageous!
As a little girl growing up in the 80′s, I loved the show Jem & the Holograms. I confess that I still have a bunch of the songs from the show that I listen to from time to time (occasionally subjecting my spin class attendees to a Jem track on my workout playlists). Looking back now as an adult ...

My +Bitch Flicks #VeronicaMars review. I can't wait to see the movie when it comes out! #fem2 #tvseries
“Why,” you ask, “are you writing about Veronica Mars, a TV show that's been off the air for years?” A few reasons. Mainly because the show is, was, and ever shall be kickassly awesome. The premise always sounds silly: teenage girl detective solves cases and fights crime, but it's so much more ...
