Damn I am so fucking stupid.  I just ate an amazing meal, but I didn't take a picture of it first.  Found some Filet Mignon for $10/kg//$5/lb at some middle of the ghetto supermarket.  I didn't think it was going to turn out worth a crap but it was GOOD!

Wrapped it in bacon, pan seered it, baked it.  Then added mushrooms to a red wine and cooked it all 'till 1/2 the liquid was gone, added minced garlic, cooked a little longer and topped the filets with the sauce.  The sauce added a nice tangyness - good enough that I didn't use A1.

Figure this might get a little more attention here.  Anyone have experience with this?

+Ben Malcheski , I know that santoprene overmolds to polycarbonate perfectly, as I'm currently making parts at work out of those two materials.

Nearly gave myself a heart attack assembling these machines.  I forgot to put the jumpers on for 1/32nd microstepping.  And these motors didn't miss a step while trying to home.  Just sounded like a very loud, fast ZIP! and it was done.  Yikes.  I think I understand why the TinyG board uses 1/8th microstepping...

So, anyone who uses the plethora of slicers available out there, have any of you noticed Cura underextrudes compared to KISS and Slic3r?  I've tried modifying the filament diameter and extrusion multiplier, but even bumping the extrusion multiplier up 20%, I am seeing absolutely no actual increased amount of extrusion on the tops of my text cubes.

This isn't a Cura comment. Sorry

I have found that Slic3r 1.0 over extrudes by 30%. I changed nothing except upgrading the software. Very frustrating to have it work one day then not the next.

So I mentioned I was interested in scanning - I had tried scanning this tail light before with terrible results.  I tried again this evening, but I decided to tear up paper strips, and paper mache the tail light of my Honda Del-Sol (Custom tail lights I'm working on designing).  Turns out, paper mache REALLY does the trick!  It even got the minor details on the outer rim of the tail light where I pushed the paper in a little so I could distinguish the outline.

The output mesh can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByxvvRr2A-puYXZlNHQxMHN2SE0/edit?usp=sharing in OBJ format with texture in the zip file.  Now I've gotta learn how to edit meshes a little better than I currently can, and grab just the tail light and then make it manifold so I can print a copy and get the size right. :D

Then, onto vacuum forming....

I like the paper mache idea. For laser scanners to do clear or reflective surfaces, I've seen a spray of white powder to make it so the part can be 'seen' by the laser. I like the paper for photogammetry as it gives texture for the algorithms to chew on.

So, how is this being done?  And can it be replicated in the Atmel space?  I would enjoy not ever having to hook up endstops ever again...

You could do this with Z if you home to MAX instead of MIN, or even just put some sort of adjustable hard stop in the MIN position. If you make it equivalent to a Z endstop rather than trying to make it equivalent to a Z probe, using stall detection for Z shouldn't be a problem.

Thinking of playing with something like this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:126537 for the Z carriage.  Has anyone played with this before?  Worth looking at maybe?  Benefits are very little friction, still holds its place on poweroff, and given enough force, the bearings will actually slide on the rod...
