Story
Introduction
Finnish BJJ brown belt (by Demian Maia) has been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling since 2004. Jyri started his training under the watchful eyes of fellow countrymen Tuomas Murdoch (purple belt) and Sammy Hämäläinen (brown belt), very succesful competitors and trainers in their own right, at GB-Gym Helsinki.

Shortly after Jyri started his training at the highly modern academy, GB-Gym, it became affiliated with the brasilian jiu-jitsu team Brasa and with one of it's more succesful black belts, Demian Maia. Inspired by Demian's extremely techical jiu-jitsu, Jyri packed his rucksack and left to Brazil to live and train under the instruction of Demian Maia.

After living 9 months in São Paulo, Brazil, Jyri desided that it was time to return to Finland and share the knowledge he gained during his stay in Brazil. Since that day Jyri has been teaching regular classes at GB-Gym in Helsinki and traveling around Finland giving jiu-jitsu seminars.

At the end of 2009, after a dissapointing year full of injuries and sickness, Jyri desided it was time for a second trip to the source - Brazil. Jyri trained at the very high level Demian Maia JJ Acedemy in São Paulo, tuned his technic and condition for the demanded level to do well in the 2010 Mundials. But once again Jyri lost the first fight in the most important championship of the year and was forced to return to home without the one thing he has been hunting for years - the world championship.

After the mundials Jyri returned to Brazil to train for few months more before going back to Finland. Just few days before returning to home, Demian Maia gave Jyri the Brown belt ("for reasons unknown" says Jyri). Now Jyri is back in Finland focusing 100% on JJ.

Since the beginning of his training, Jyri had high goals in jiu-jitsu and therefore started competing just after 4 months of training, already gaining the 3rd place in his first tournament. From the first competition till this very day, Jyri has been competing with regular schedule, achieving over 30 titles in various championships. And keeps still competing...
