A few of Frank's Friendly Cars enjoying a well-deserved slow season break. If you were a rental car on Maui, you would be eager for a little stay-cation from time to time too.

I just noticed that a Norwegian driver license expires on the date of the holder's 100th birthday. Optimism?

“Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no vehicles. Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content. Alibaba, the most valuable retailer, has no inventory. And Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. Something interesting is happening.”

Our biggest competitor on Maui owns no vehicles of its own either. It's a website that pretends to be a real business, and just offers online bookings with discounts on major rentacar-owned vehicles.

Something to consider when renting a car: Do you want to rent from a real, locally-owned business? Or would you rather just get a discount an a major company rental?

This is really good news for X-mas, for all our customers. When the majors raise their car rental rates, we get better utilization, as more people look for affordable rentacar alternatives. And better rental fleet utilization means we can continue to offer the same fair, low car rental rates for Maui visitors and residents. You asked for it, you got it - or something like that.

Car rental rates on Maui are seasonal, and they're also affected by year-to-year factors. This year they are peaking at about $900 for the week of Christmas. Last year's top car rental rate on Maui, at Christmas time, was almost $100 more, over $1,000. We keep track of rates day-to-day and year-to-year, because, hey, renting cars on Maui is our business.

Caller: It says on your website that you require a driver license to rent a car.
Superfrank: Yes sir, that's correct.
Caller: Well I don't really have a driver license. Can I still rent a car anyway?
Superfrank: [long pause]
Caller: Hello?

Be advised that driving on Maui is a full-on contact sport. This car from our rental fleet, carrying four occupants, was creamed at an intersection, by a truck that ran a red light. I have lost count of the accidents and fender-benders my customers have been in - it is a nearly weekly occurrence. But this is the most serious by far, with all four being transported straight to the hospital. It is pure luck there were no fatalities. If you come to Maui, and plan to drive a rental car, please have the best insurance money can buy, because chances are high that you will need it. According to insurance company data, Hawaii has the worst drivers of all the US, with the island of Maui being the worst of all the others.

Customer calls and states he can no longer get into his car. On the scene, it is found that his car keys have been cut clean in half - not broken in lock, not bent and broken, cut clean. Customer states he does not know how such a thing could have happened. Yah, right.
