Remember this saddle? I was cautiously optimistic after a couple rides that this would not suck and would also NOT be an ass-hatchet. I was wrong. It rapidly turned out to be one of the most painful saddles I've ridden in a long time. The first several minutes of any ride start out okay then things just deteriorate from there. I thought at first that I might have really bruised my sit bones trying out the leather Rivet saddle I'd bought and that I just needed a few days to get over that and recover/get used to the Ergon. No luck. The ride home yesterday evening was so painful I was regularly standing up to get relief from the saddle. So many folks I know have bought the Brooks C17 Cambium and like it, I thought I'd give it a try. Bought one from Wallingford Bicycles which means I have about 6 months to try it out. Assuming it doesn't kill my ass immediately.

I've been thinking about making my own handlebar roll system and this just took pretty much all of the guesswork out of the project. Sure, I could still figure out my own approach, but I'd probably still be pondering that sometime next year. For $5 for the Limberlost template I think this is probably just the simpler way to go and still customizeable at the same time. http://bicycletimesmag.com/how-to-make-your-own-handlebar-roll-harness/

So I'm officially back to back to Plan A. Plan A is an Alfine 8 hub. The NuVinci will be going back when the Alfine arrives.

I am cautiously optimistic. This does not appear to be an ass-hatchet. However, it will require many more miles of testing before judgement can be passed.

Incidentally, the photo of the "turtle pile" I posted the other day ( https://plus.google.com/+MattCampbell/posts/Jum3j2YY2dn ) - those were my own personal turtles, not "work" turtles. Also, they're a species called "Chinese Three-keeled Turtles, or Reeve's Turtles" which pretty much don't exist in the wild in China anymore because the Chinese ate the entire species to extinction in the wild! Reeve's Turtles are only available as captive bred animals now. Mine incidentally were purchased as babies from a US-based captive breeding facility that works with many different species. The "Asian Turtle Crisis" was a huge deal about 10 years ago, at least in herpetological circles, but as with many things, the limelight for the cause faded even though the "crisis" has continued on to this day. Many individual people, especially those in the TSA have continued for years to treat and rehabilitate turtles brought to the brink of death by this illegal and unsustainable trade - most spending thousands of dollars out of their own pockets to treat the animals in their care. Incidentally, the Turtle Survival Alliance, and their  acronym "TSA" existed LONG before the bloated joke of a security agency created by Bush.

Weather forecasters have given us the heat index and wind chill to help quantify how much the weather sucks, depending on which end of the temperature scale you're on. I think we need to push for a "swamp-ass" index.

Submitting a request for your favorite shorts to wear while cycling that are fine both on and off the bike. Not looking for lycra diaper shorts here either. I've gotten away from wearing anything with a chamois, although I might no rule them out for longer days in the saddle. For the most part, I've been getting by just fine wearing some Endura Humvee shorts without their lame button-in padded liner. Alas, the seat has worn through on these and I believe it's time to start looking for something new that is a a little less "bike-looking." Also, if I could buy Humvees without their lousy liner shorts I'd probably be all over that. One thing I don't like is back pockets. I no longer carry anything in a back pocket so I find them utterly superfluous, not to mention, back pockets means more likely to have some chaffing from bunched up pocket fabric or seams back there. Crotch gussets are pretty much a necessity as is a lack of seams. Nylon is tops for fabric as well due to breathability and quick drying. "Death cloth" (aka cotton) is right out. It's a tall order, sure, but I'm willing to bet some of you can give me a few decent suggestions.
