Phytoplankton at night. Vaadhoo Island, Maldives.

Phytoplankton have adapted to the darkness of the ocean by utilising chemicals known as luciferins to ‘glow’. The light is produced by a series of oxidation reactions set off by a catalyst called luciferase. Bioluminescence is very useful in the open ocean; be it for finding food and mates, thwarting predators, or simply lighting the way.

Siblings, Olympic National Park, WA
#photographyworkflow , #howtophotograph , #landscapephotography

I love shooting marine life in the tide pools found in Olympic National Park...and couple of years ago while on vacation with the kids I stumbled upon a family of brilliant sea anemones.

How was this photograph created?
This is image about how light and water interact with one another. These anemone were lying in "PERFECT" amount of water...just an enough so their tentacles are submerged under water but not deep enough to be dull their brilliant colors. I positioned my camera so that light from the surface of the water bounced off away from the lens...leaving me with near perfect view underwater. Had there been too much water the clarity would not be there...had there been too little water the anemones would close up.

Shifting Sands

Nothing lasts forever, not even this planet we sit on, time passes like the shifting sands blown by the storm. So enjoy the storm, enjoy watching the clouds roll in from the sea and the feel of the sand shift beneath your feet. It will still be there when you and I have gone but what memories will we take with us?

Good morning G+
