Kiwa GASTEC at CRE hosts UK Hybrid Boiler / Heat Pump Appliance Seminar, sponsored by National Grid. The day offered a detailed insight into exactly what hybrid systems are, how they operate and the part they could play in maintaining the national energy balance, helping the UK achieve its 2050 Carbon Reduction Commitment as well as providing a useful, cost effective appliance for the end user.

For the first time, appliance manufacturers, utility suppliers, National Grid and Government representatives were able to pool ideas to develop a plan for realising the full potential of this exciting technology.

DECC have announced a new UK CCS competition. The funds available include £1b for upfront costs of new projects and £125m for Research & Development (including £13m for a new CCS Research Centre).

The CCS industry has welcomed the news. The CEO of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association said, “We welcome this announcement; it creates an opportunity for the UK to take a leading role in world markets whilst cost-effectively reducing emissions, creating employment and generating prosperity. We are looking forward to working with Government to enable industry to capitalise on today’s announcement to ensure extensive investment in CCS over the coming decades.”

DECC have published new energy data for the UK.

Over the last few years, DECC has developed energy consumption data to regional and local authority levels. This data reinforces the importance of local and regional decision-making in helping achieve national energy policy objectives – as identified in the Energy WHite paper of 2003.

DECC have published a new heat map regarding a strategic framework for low carbon heat in UK. It is open for comments until 24 May.

The document sets out supply and demand of heat in the UK presently and reports on how this will change to form a low carbon heat network in the future.
