When you are born and when you achieve or attempt life goals can make a big difference. I'm a Gen Xer and it was a lot easier to get into elite colleges than it is today simply because there were fewer of us (not to mention a less insane process). But this shocked me... the impact of starting college during the Great Recession.

I wrote this piece for FiveThirtyEight on post-colonial politics of race, jobs, and immigration in Paris... post-attack politics, now.

I've had some incredible conversations this week in NY and at a summit in Baltimore about immigration, refugees, domestic jobs, race, the economy. There are no easy answers. The only easy-seeming one -- to let our fears rule our actions and our politics -- get us nowhere, here or abroad.
