A post from a former student finishing his degree in CS at Harvard this spring:

6 years ago, I started learning Racket for Special Topics in computer science with Todd O'Bryan, now I'm sitting here in the last meeting of CS 260, a class I'm taking for my masters in CS... going over Racket.
And thus, my formal education in CS ends as it began.

Here's a tip for everyone out there and future me: Don't start trying to remodel your kitchen a couple of weeks before you move to California. It increases your stress level. And it's always more complicated than you think it will be.

Lightning struck Manual tower. Part fell off, part hanging precariously.

I was in that phase too. The default editor that Git uses on Windows is vim. (We've already seen this E6 times.)

Feature Request: Categories should be nestable under one another. For example, I'd like to track how much I pay for Transportation in general, but split that into Fuel, Service, Car Payment, etc. Having a tree of categories would make it possible to see both generally how much I spend on something, as well as how much specifically on sub-categories. (Another place this is useful is entertainment--I like to keep track of how much I'm spending on books vs movies vs hobbies to make sure one category isn't getting out of control.)

great suggestion, Todd - not the first time we've talked about this, so I'll update this request in our backlog.

In the meantime, if you use the web app and are particularly interested in specific sub-category of spending, you could use our transaction Flag filter.  Just scroll down on the 'All Transactions' page and open the 'Filter By Flag' panel under your account list on the left nav.  You can create a new flag for the sub-category you want to track, and then add the flag to the transactions you want.  Then when you filter using a flag, you can see the spending total.

I'm just going to put this out there... The US should have a $1 coin in wide circulation. To prevent it from feeling like a quarter, it should be a 13-sided regular polygon (for the original colonies). That's close enough to round to work in vending machines, but feels different enough that people would not be confused. US Mint, are you listening?

I have officially accepted a job working at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, on a project that I know nothing about. My first day will be August 11th, and the current plan is to leave Louisville with the bare essentials of belongings on August 9th. I'm both excited and nervous. Oh, and just dreading all the stuff that needs to be done to get a house ready to sell and a houseful of stuff ready to send cross-country.

Dinner with me and former students or other friends (Do I have friends who aren't former students in the Bay Area, other than PamBob?) Wednesday night around 7:30 or so. Location TBD, but somewhere between SF and the South Bay, hopefully easily accessible from both. (Is that even possible?) If you have suggestions for a place where people could just drop by (not a sit-down restaurant, in other words) that's close to public transit, let Nick Fishman know.

Hey all Manualites (and other friends) in the Bay Area. I'm going to be out there 6/17-6/19 and would love to catch up with people.  I'm spoken for from 9:00-3:00 on 6/18, but should have some time in the evening 6/17 and 6/18, and hopefully early in the day 6/19. Let me know when I can see you!

Score one more for Windows 8. I had a contractor at the house today--while he was trying to show us the different choices we had and how much each would cost, Windows 8 restarted and proceeded to install updates to the tune of 30 minutes of us with an unusable laptop, trying to remember what the numbers were. I can only imagine how that would go over at a Microsoft board meeting...

I read a story. Dunno if it was true. But bill gates tried using windows 8 on his business laptop and uninstalled it after 1 day saying it was impossible to get anything done... Again. Don't know if it was true. But hilarious nonetheless

Heard a horrible joke on NPR Sunday...

Two cats, One-Two-Three cat and Un-Deux-Trois cat decide to have a contest swimming the English Channel. Guess who won?

Of course, One-Two-Three cat. Because Un-Deux-Trois cat sank!

(Reminds me of Pam Greene's post about multilingual counting from a while ago...)
